The most inclusive policy that is adhered to is the Equal Opportunities Policy soon to be replaced by The Equality Act 2010. This policy was set up to ensure that everybody is treated with respect and dignity regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or nationality. It values diversity and is designed to prevent discrimination of any description.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 is equally important and is the primary piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety in the UK. The Health and Safety Executive are responsible for enforcing the Act. Health and safety is the first subject that students cover. This includes college induction, workshop safety, and fire procedures.
All manufacturing disciplines must also adhere to ISO 9001, which is one of a family of standards that is concerned with quality of manufacture. It lays out the requirements that organisations have to meet in terms of quality management systems and relevant documentation.
The aeronautical industry has to operate within the framework of the Civil Aviation Authority which contains the Civil Aviation Act (CAA) and the Air Navigation Order (ANO). The Civil Aviation Act powers are exercised by the Secretary of State.
These are the main legislative requirements that engineering and aviation must adhere to in the UK.
