3 ideas to build one smarter planet 1. Instrument the world’s system (INSTRUMENTED):- i) By making the world’s system instrumented I.B.M. means that now they have the ability to measure, sense and see the exact condition of everything ii) They believe that everything will get instrumented ranging from supply chains, health care networks, cities to natural systems like rivers 2. Interconnect them (INTERCONNECTED) i) Interconnected means connecting people, systems and objects so that they can they can interact and communicate within themselves freely and in entirely new way 3. Make them intelligent (INTELLIGENT) i) Intelligent means being dynamic i.e. responding to changes quickly and accurately and get better results by predicting and optimizing for future events

INSTRUMENTED + INTERCONNECTED + INTELLIGENT= SMARTER PLANET, this gives an opportunity to think and act in new ways socially, economically and technically & make system more efficient, responsive and productive.
By smarter, we mean that intelligence is being infused into the systems and processes that make the world work—into things no one would recognize as computers: cars, appliances, roadways, power grids, clothes, even natural systems such as agriculture and waterways.
At I.B.M. they describe the statement “our planet is becoming ‘smarter’” as:- * With billions of inexpensive sensors being embedded inside everything from train and planes to livestock and medicines, our world is being instrumented, allowing systems and objects to ‘speak’ with each other * Linked to powerful backend(support) systems these instruments can analyse data an turn information into insights in real time, turning mere assets into intelligent assets * Basically using the assets in best possible way (optimum utilization) and conserving them for future use, i.e. “SUSTAINIBLITY DEVELOPMENT”

Today, we live in a dynamic and eclectic community. The wave of innovations and the velocity of change in globalization and technological advances result in new market forces. To survive and prosper in such an environment, intelligent innovations are imperative. The ultimate purpose of innovation is to help create a future where other generations can enjoy a safe and convenient life. New technologies should focus on being smarter rather than stronger because smarter things can respond to the environment by altering their properties and they offer more functionality than conventional things, which is imperative in today’s society of cutting edge technology.…

Volvo split from Ford in in 2010. In doing so they needed to create their own standalone IT environment and at the same time improve its business intelligence capabilities and operational efficiency (Microsoft, 2012). In a world where many consumers value smart technology in coexistence with automotive engineering, Volvo has created vehicles with hundreds of sensors and CPU’s embedded throughout the car (I-CIO, 2011). “Besides vehicle data gathered by sensors in and on the vehicle, we also collect visual information from four cameras. This gives us a good view of what happened in the cab and on the road at any given point in time” (Volvo Group, 2011). From the central locking system to the on board camera’s, data is being captured for use within the vehicle and then transmitted via the cloud back to Volvo (I-CIO, 2011). Once data is received at Volvo it is streamed to a centralized analysis hub (the Volvo Data Warehouse), alongside data from customer relationship management systems (CRM), dealership systems, and product development and design systems (I-CIO, 2011). Once data is retrieved at the Volvo Data Warehouse it is archived where it can be retrieved and analyze or manipulated by Volvo employees. Through the cloud Volvo is massing large amount of rich data and this is providing them with the opportunity to “turn that resource into something that no only helps build better cars, but also helps the customer have a better experience [through their interaction and above all safety]” (I-CIO, 2011).…

Few people realize how essential the sensor industry is to today’s society. Sensors can be found in almost everything we use on a day to day basis. America’s demand for smaller, lighter and faster products has driven the technology to innovate at a break-neck pace in order to keep up with the demand. According to the National Science Foundation, “incorporating new sensor technologies, manufacturers can bring new capabilities to their products while improving performance and efficiency.” (NSF, 2008)…
