One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, takes the spotlight for this reflective essay. The mythical town of Macondo is the main setting for the story during a time of turmoil in Latin America. Gabriel Garcia Marquez reveals an exciting world of fantasy and realism by cleverly inserting works of fiction at unpredictable intervals. This addition of magical realism can be found throughout the story.
The mention of flying carpets at the carnival within this fantasy world portrays a perfect example of magical realism. My expectation of a carnival is that strange and exotic objects exist, but flying carpets symbolizes fantasy. The realism of this passage is that the existence of a carnival is perfectly normal, but flying carpets cannot possibility exist. Confusion overtakes my mind while reading the section mentioning the flying carpets because everything that occurs prior to this point contain realistic world elements. After reading the section several times over, I realize that this is a world of realism as well as that of fiction. Magical realism confuses me by making me doubt if what I am reading is a work of fiction or that of realism.
The difference in culture between Latin America and North America is another major factor influencing my understanding of the story. Because of our cultural difference, it is entirely possible that a cultural difference can be mistaken for fantasy due to magical realism. The similarly in the names of the characters may be a cultural different or fictional. In American culture, the children usually get unique first names but similar last name. Members of the Buendia family either had their entire name or a large portion of their names identical to another member of the family. This tradition of using names of living or past relatives found within the story could possibly be part of South America culture. Due to my personal lack of cultural knowledge about South America, I had to suspend my own disbelief of this

The word RAID stands for redundant ray of independent disks. Raid is usually used in environments with servers or at a business with large file servers, transaction of application servers, where data accessibility is critical, and fault tolerance is required. There are 8 types of raids, Raid 0 is technically not a raid level because it offers no fault tolerance but, it operates by providing data stripping which takes the information and spreads it out over all the disk drives. However, if one drive fails than the entire raid fails. Raid 1 is also referred to as disk mirroring; it basically takes the information from one disk and stores it on multiple disks, this is great for fault tolerance because if one disk fails the information is on another disk. The only drawback to raid 1 is data access speed and the cost because there are more disks involved. Raid 5 is considerably the most commonly used Raid level simply because it provides both stripping and parity. The parity block is distributed to all of the drives making it easier to access the information or have a balanced access load. The parity in raid 5 is used if one of the drives happens to fail, to recover that drive which makes the raid 5 the most common however the only drawback to this raid level is that it has a relatively slow write cycle. Lastly, RAID level 6 which is very similar to raid level 5 but provides two parity functions rather than just one. A minimum of four disks is required to create RAID level 6.…

The English 3003 class has helped me in various ways in improving and shaping my writing skills. Although some of the work were tedious and sometimes frustration at times, but overall it was a fun class to be in and was a great learning experience as well. I had to take this class not because I failed to secure an 8 in the WST test but because I had problems mainly due to my poor writing. Throughout the class this quarter I experienced many methods and different types of writings and essays. The writing homework took time, and several ideas and sometimes google searches to make it a good essay I can score marks on, but in return, I learned skills and techniques…

The Genre: You’re familiar with the book and movie reviews that appear in newspapers, magazines, and websites. They are just one kind of evaluative writing, but from them we can identify the key components of the genre. First, there is the object to be evaluated. Often this is a single thing—a music CD, a scholarly study, a corporation—but it can also be an idea or process: the impact of a particular band on rock history, the importance of a new trend in scholarly opinion, or the management practices used by a particular sector of industry. Second, there are the criteria…

If Genesis 2-3 were written from Eve’s point of view it might tell a different story than what we are familiar with. The LORD God had created the earth in six days but even someone as great as he needed a day to rest. The seventh day was a day of rest and God made it a holy day. Upon beholding his creation the LORD God realized that “he had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground” (2:5). Finally he caused a mist to rise from the earth and water everything; I had no reason not to believe what I was told; that Adam, the first man came into existence because “the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Gen. 2:7). God created a garden in the eastern parts of Eden and Adam grew to know this as his home.…
