IUPUI Day Of Caring
Upon being assigned a Cultural & Service event with a paper I really wanted to both pick something I had never done before but, also gain a worthwhile experience. Since being at IUPUI I have not done much community service mostly because I don't think I realized how many actual opportunities that I would actually enjoy doing where there. I also did not realize the massive amount of cultural events that there are on campus in a variety of capacities from cultural talks to immersion experiences for non-international students. It was almost hard to choose where to get involved thus, I attended more then two events however, IUPUI Day of Caring and ACRIEMA were the most impactful.

Firstly, it sets a fantastic example of what as students and people in a loving community should do, which is to give back and help those that needs it. Service should be a priority in everyone’s lives because everyone including ourselves benefit from some form of service every single day. Mentoring is definitely a form of service. I am giving my time to help other students with their first year college experience just as someone helped me. I am doing both because I enjoy doing it but it impacts the community here at IUPUI. It makes people feel more included, it helps people be successful, and it gives students the push to serve themselves. I think a good perspective for this was another volunteer event that I participated in called Fall Fest. There I had the opportunity to talk to potential Women in Science Students about why I love IUPUI and what makes it the best place for a woman science major. The topic mentioned over and over was the resources, the experiences, the opportunities, and of course the mentoring. Every single one of the ladies present representing IUPUI mentioned a mentoring experience and how it has both impacted their education, career choice, and personal lives.
