Mr. LalitModi, the former Chairman of IPL designed and introduced the IPL format in 2008. Top players from India and other cricket playing nations and also players from India’s domestic cricket tournaments playin IPL. A Franchise owns a team and the players are 'contracted' for a season at an auction. Each player commands a price based on his ranking and current form. Cricket is a bat-and-ball sport introduced to India by the British. It is a sport that can be enjoyed by a wide variety of people. This sport also has a very clear relation with politics. Cricket has been around for quite some time, and as we can see, it became increasingly popular throughout the early to mid-1950s. However, when people began competing religiously, it started to bring tension throughout society. It created political issues as well. However, there are multiple problems that arose, and they include social conflicts and disagreements (Documents 1, 4, and 6), religious issues (Documents 5, 7, 8 and 9), and culture (Documents 2, 3 and 10).…

    West Indian Culture

Cricket today, as it has been said many times, is not what it used to be. Unfortunately many young West Indians know very little of what is once was and what it stood for, they take for granted the techniques and its origins. The level of West Indies cricket has been diluted due to the increase of tourism and fast paced games. However there are many West Indians who hold strong to the fact that cricket is part of our culture and heritage. This archipelago in the Americas has produced many fine cricketers throughout the years. The Caribbean is a unique multicultural and multiethnic region; the majority of the population was forced to migrate after the original inhabitants faced almost complete annihilation. The survivors were at no level to repopulate the Caribbean. As a result there was no previous pattern for the new comers to follow; they had to create their own. West Indians had to develop their own religion, food, politics, art and essentially their entire culture. Cricket was one such aspect, though not their own, over time they moulded and shaped it into what it is today. Cricket came to the West Indies via the English military that were deployed to defeat Napoleon’s west India project and to suppress uprisings, they played the game during their free time, which was relaxing and reminded them of home. The game was introduced as a means of portraying the high statute that was English. During the Victorian age the English empire was at its peak, it had expanded considerably and was proud of its successes, she deemed herself as superior in commerce, morals and race. At this time the only thing that was missing was cricket, Lord Harris, a colonial administrator saw cricket as a method of teaching discipline, loyalty and acceptance of decisions in order to consolidate the empire.…

    Analysis on T20 D/L Method

With the introduction of Twenty20 (T20) cricket, teams around the world have had to adapt to different strategies. Bowling and batting styles have changed, from the increasing use of ‘slower balls’ and ‘yorkers’ to the outrageous ‘switch hits’ and ‘scoops’. However the one thing that has remained and will always remain is the threat of external factors, mainly the rain. One Day International (ODI) cricket has transformed over the years however the rain rule method of setting targets has remained constant for over a decade, the Duckworth/Lewis (D/L) method, arguably the most statistically influential phenomenon in cricket. While the accuracy of the D/L method has been well analysed, the comparison of it to its best alternative has not been given as much attention. The Jayadevan (VJD) method, an alternative which has been over looked for the past 10 years by the International Cricket Council (ICC) has now come to the forefront as the D/L method has started to show weaknesses. An overview of the methods adopted in the past is given and an in depth analysis performed on the accuracy of the D/L method and the VJD method in comparison to actual match outcomes. Using Kappa statistics it is found that for the simplest case, the D/L method has a higher agreement with reality then the VJD method. All the analysis is performed on real match data collected from Twenty 20 International matches (T20I’s) and Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.…

The two things that unite the rich and the poor, the educated elite and the illiterate, the city-dwellers and the villagers in India are undoubtedly – Bollywood and Cricket! Both have their own share of success and star factor – Shah Rukh Khan has a big fan following in Germany, while Sachin Tendulkar was gifted a Ferrari by Michael Schumacher. Both are big businesses – the Bollywood stars as do the cricketers appear regularly on TV to endorse everything from under-garments to life insurance to passenger cars. How about bringing them together – and that’s what happened in 2008 when the Indian Premier League (IPL) was inaugurated. Cricket, in its traditional form, usually being a day-long or a five-day game, because of the the duration of the game, was always seen by the Europeans and Americans as something boring that only cricket-crazy Indians could watch. How about making it shorter, spicing it up with some Bollywood masala adding a huge entertainment and star factor to it – and this in short is the definition of IPL. This format of the game has many similarities with both the traditional game of cricket as well as Bollywood. First, the duration – this format of the game, more popularly dubbed T20 (for Twenty-20 as it has 20 overs (1 over = 6 balls) a side), runs for around 3 hours – the same duration of a typical Bollywood movie. And the heroes are both on and off the field. The on-field heroes are the cricket stars from around the world who entertain the audience with their cricket skills. While the teams with fancy names like Delhi-Dare-Devils, Chennai-Super-Kings, etc., have a mix of Indian and international players are mostly owned by Bollywood stars or big Indian business houses. The off-the-field heroes are thus the Bollywood stars and other page-3 regulars (the ‘socialites’) who add to the star quotient. The only thing that is left from a typical Bollywood movie are the ‘item numbers’. These are substituted for by the grooving cheer-leaders with skimpy…
