Life is a balancing act between the past, present, and future. Expressing guilt and regret about the past is almost instinctual, but we accept that it is unchangeable and we put it behind us. However, there are some, who so desperately cling to the idea of the past and believe that they have the power to repeat it. While an action can be repeated in order to emulate an action of the past, the entirety of the moment can never be recreated. This is due to the fact that unlike a physical action, the emotions and intent behind the action are impossible to duplicate.…

There is a very fine line between nostalgia and obsessing on the past. Many people argue that one should not waste today reliving yesterday. Unfortunately, the human psyche is delicate and we need to process our past in order to move forward. For example, when mourning the loss of a loved one, most of us tend to be paralyzed or stuck in the past because we have to process what happened. How long it takes to move through the negative and positive events of the past is highly dependent on the individual. The protagonists in the novels The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger uniquely put forth the dangers of existing in the present, but psychologically living in the past. Both of these novels portray…

The past should stay in the past, no matter how much you think you miss it. The past – while there were good times – is a place I never wanted to revisit ever again. It was an intense love affair, filled with passion and bursting with emotion, although, that was only on my part. If I’m honest, I don’t think he cared much about me. It took me a while to realize this, but when I did, it took a lot of courage to leave him.…

Throughout your story I learned one very important common theme that I’m going to try to carry forth into my life. I’m going to attempt to live each day to the fullest without looking ahead towards tomorrow. Truthfully this is a great way to look at the future, because at times we look ahead because what lies ahead of us often seems better. However, we don’t truly understand that some parts of the future won’t necessarily be what they appear to be. In your story I learned that the present always has the ability to shape the future in the best of ways and the worst of ways. This often happens when we least expect it too. The more we long for the future the more we push away our current lives. Another thought to be considered is that in the future we may long for the past because the future isn’t always what it’s made out to be. Ultimately, we need to focus on right now and live in the present. This is how you lived your life during the war and it paid dividends in the long run. You managed to survive this horrible war and in the process you had the opportunity to meet your uncle Tommy, you met Laura Simms and you moved to the United States. Thank you for teaching me to honor each day and live each day to the fullest!…

The contradiction regarding time in history is that we have higher buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but confined viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we purchase more, but enjoy like a miser. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time to enjoy them. 2.…

Sometimes in life we find ourselves searching to replace or relive those moments or people that have played integral parts of our lives. These moments, for whatever reason, have a hold on us. They’ve left a yearning deep within us that won’t be quenched until we experience something or someone that feels just as good. However, the sad truth is that sometimes we waste our whole lives searching for that thing that probably will never be again and miss the preciousness of every moment thereafter.…

We tend to remember those things that we had but realize that we have our normal day to day lives to live and can never fully be able to recover that particular way of life. As Twain wrote, “I had lost something which could never be restored to me while I lived. All the grace, the beauty, the poetry, had gone out of the majestic river!” (438). Through this he says how we may have once saw the beauty and fun in life through which we actually see in our day to day lives but given time everything is routine and more ordinary to us. Twain also said, “I still kept in mind a certain wonderful sunset which I witnessed when steam boating was new to me” (438-439). We should rather like a child enjoy those things that we had with a passion and to never let them go. When loved ones die do we just forget about them and never remember, or do we move on and remember those things that made us happy and too never forget those memories in order to move on and hope that once again we can feel again that joy. Remember the times when we once used our imagination in such a way where we bask our very minds with joy and…

If I have the opportunity to travel back through time. I would like to stop at the Vietnam War era. When I was young, I didn’t obtain anything my history teacher lectured. I just learned to get over with it and not comprehend any information. Not until I came to the United States and started to learn about my country's history. By that time, I was old enough to understand what this war was about and how many innocent lives have been sacrificed. This topic has attracted all my interest. I spent a day researching it. I was so emotional when I saw the photo from this war or think about it. I’m not meant to exaggerate, but I couldn’t hold my tears when I read about it. I hope for one day that I could be present in this era. To…

With no doubt, time goes by faster than realized. Throughout a lifetime several things may happen to make us want to make time stand still. In today's time majority of people take their life and time on Earth for granted. Although it is not possible to make an event last forever, if I had the choice to go back to a certain time/event I would go back to the summer of 2012. In June of 2012 I started my summer off in Philadelphia. From Philadelphia I then traveled to Disney World in Florida. But why was this time so important to me? Firstly, this summer was not all about fun. Of course, I had a great time, but it was about the family I spent it with. Secondly, Disney World is such a happy place to be. Above all, this was time I knew I would never get back: although, with the choice to go back I would.…
