I bought a 2017 MacBook Pro: did I make a mistake?
Well, the answer is a resounding NO!
I don’t consider it a mistake looking at the current scenario and the pace with which technology is progressing these days.
To begin with, I would like to give a background about the setup I used to get work done earlier.
Back in the day, when I started learning web development, I had a decent i3/4GB laptop, which did most of my work fine, until it broke apart one day.
So, I did the most obvious thing, got a new one. However, at this point in time, most of us might have gone with a Mac, but I still ought to go with the old and familiar Windows eco-system. I must admit, it was the best out of all laptops I ever used before. It ran everything thrown at it smoothly, without any lag or hiccup. It was a substantial change compared to the other operating systems I ever used. I stuck to it for hours and enjoyed the experience. That’s when the person said, “Everything just works on a Mac. If you want to get your work done don’t look for anything else, get a Mac.”
Sometime later, getting very much offended with my laptop, I thought about it and finally got a Mac. It is a 13inch MacBook Pro (without TouchBar) with 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB LPDDR3 RAM, and 256GB SSD storage.
I found this configuration ideal for things I use it for. The 256GB SSD is sufficient considering the things I keep on my device. For mass storage, I prefer an external HDD. The 8GB RAM seems enough as a lot of my tasks don’t require me jumbling too much across heavy apps, making 8GB sufficient. Not to mention, the 2.3 GHz i5 processor, powering it, is excellent when it comes to performance and definitely suits my suite of applications. The new KabyLake processor on MBP 2017 is believed to be far better than the Broadwell processor on MBP 2015, in terms of power consumption and performance. Also, heat dissipation on MBP 2017 model is comparatively less than MBP 2015 model as Apple went with two fans instead of one this time, which helps to bring down the temperature, and prevents it from interfering with performance.
From connectivity point-of-view, it was a reasonable debate to get the new model as everything is expected to be USB-C in upcoming years, especially when you consider the pace with which many giant tech-companies are switching to it and making it a default standard of connectivity. It is very prominent in the Android industry these days, with so many of them introducing type-C on their devices.
All these things built-up and compelled me to go with the newer 2017 MacBook
