Hydrogen Fuel Cells There are many reasons to look for new cleaner forms of energy. Fossil fuels, being non-renewable, will eventually run out. Pollution from burning fossil fuels destroys our environment. Hydrogen fuel cells could be used many places where fossil fuels are currently being used. Using hydrogen as a form of energy can not only reduce our dependence on imported oil, but also benefit the environment by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and pollutants that affect our air quality. ("Hydrogen Production.") Hydrogen is not an energy source, it is an energy carrier. It can store and deliver energy but must still be produced from compounds that contain it. Hydrogen can be produced using diverse, domestic resources including fossil fuels, such as coal (with carbon sequestration) and natural gas; nuclear; and biomass and other renewable energy technologies, such as wind, solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric power. ("Hydrogen Production.") The fact that there are many different ways to produce hydrogen makes it more appealing as a source of energy. Although it can be produced at large plants to be distributed to smaller locations, it could also be produced right at refueling stations or power sites. Hydrogen fuel cells convert the energy in hydrogen to electricity. They are much more efficient at converting the energy source than other methods. The gasoline engine in a conventional car is less than 20% efficient in converting the chemical energy in gasoline into power that moves the vehicle, under normal driving conditions. ("Hydrogen Fuel Cells.") Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles use electric motors and are much more energy efficient. They use 40-60 percent of the fuel’s energy. This would correspond to more than a 50% reduction in fuel consumption when compared to a conventional vehicle with an internal combustion engine. Fuel cells are also much quieter, have fewer moving parts, and are well suited to a variety of applications. A single fuel

    Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, but only recently have people been able to harness this resource and turn it into energy. Hydrogen fuel cell cars are one such advancement made in the effort to turn hydrogen gas into electricity. Fuel cells in the car are used to convert hydrogen into an electrical current, and thus power the vehicle. Fuel cells convert hydrogen and oxygen into water while producing electricity. Hydrogen fuel cell cars are also quiet (similar to an electric vehicle), very energy efficient, have zero emissions and have equivalent range and performance to their gasoline counterparts. However, these types of cars still haven’t gained popularity despite these advantages. This is because more research still needs to go into this new emerging technology. Advancements still needed to be made in order for FCVs (Fuel Cell Vehicles) to be successful and competitive alternatives for consumers. Things such as onboard hydrogen storage, fuel cell durability and reliability, readily available refueling stations, and of course vehicle cost need to be addressed.1 In the long run however, the advantages of Fuel Cell Vehicles will outweigh the costs.     Hydrogen has some pros that you cannot say no to, such as highly reducing the carbon emissions because it is pure and making a safer environment. But hydrogen does have some cons too. Hydrogen isn’t always clean to produce. It’s expensive to pull hydrogen from water. Non-renewable sources of hydrogen, such as oil and natural gas, are much cheaper, but using them still puts a drain on our fossil fuels supplies. Ironically, the carbon dioxide released in the process of producing hydrogen from fossil fuels cancels out any benefits to the environment. But as I said if we produce hydrogen from clean energy we can still get the benefits and cancel out any risky harmful actions to our environment which is still worth doing…

    Although it takes a higher than average energy to isolate hydrogen, one must realize that even extracting gasoline from a well requires an energy input [5]. Fuel cells can be made more efficient than their present state if isolating hydrogen could be made cheaper. A cheaper way to separate hydrogen is electrolysis. Electrolysis includes using electrical current to split the water molecule into its main components - hydrogen and oxygen - and then containing those components as fuel. Here lies the misconception: when introduced to electrolysis, most people think that the electrical current will come from energy produced by fossil fuels. This, however, is far from the truth. The negative effects that oil has had on the environment have been a major factor in the manufacturing of cars that contain hydrogen fuel cells.     A fuel-cell car that produces its hydrogen directly from gasoline had a lot of merit. The system was dependent on the viability of a process called "on-board reforming." Hydrogen is made commercially from oil or natural gas. The fossil fuel is combined with water in a "reforming" reactor, producing mainly hydrogen and carbon dioxide. (No, you can't get completely away from that stuff, only hope to minimize its production.) If a small enough reactor could be built and installed in the car along with the fuel cells and ancillary equipment, it just might beat the internal combustion engine for efficiency and emission control.
