Hydrogen Fuel
Hydrogen has a high specific energy, high flame speed, wide range of flammability, and clean burning characteristics which suggest a possibility of high performance in internal combustion engines (ICE). These attributes have been realized for more than half a century since the onset of hydrogen engine development. In the early 1990s, FSEC conducted research on using hydrogen in an ICE. This work resulted in the development of a mixed fuel called HYTEST. There are four basic issues regarding hydrogen-fueled engines and vehicles: engine backfire and susceptibility of hydrogen to surface ignition, somewhat reduced engine power, high nitric oxide (NOx) emissions, and the problem of on-board storage of the fuel and safety. Although partial solutions have been found to most of these problems, there still is no general consensus of the best method to finally resolve all of these issues.
As far as the performance of a hydrogen engine is concerned, its limit of flammability in air is the most important factor. Hydrogen's low lean limit of flammability provides an opportunity to use the lean-burn engine (LBE) concept with hydrogen engines quite successfully. The LBE concept refers to engine operation that is leaner (higher air to fuel mass ratio) than stoichiometric (chemically correct air-fuel ratio). The amount of work done during the expansion process in a lean-burn engine is relatively large (due to lower cycle temperature), resulting in a proportionally higher thermal efficiency.
The LBE concept with hydrogen further facilitates and promotes the use of so-called "mixture regulation" or "quality governing" at light engine loads. Unlike gasoline-fueled engines that require throttling at lower engine loads, hydrogen-fueled engines can be operated at reduced power levels by limiting only

    Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, but only recently have people been able to harness this resource and turn it into energy. Hydrogen fuel cell cars are one such advancement made in the effort to turn hydrogen gas into electricity. Fuel cells in the car are used to convert hydrogen into an electrical current, and thus power the vehicle. Fuel cells convert hydrogen and oxygen into water while producing electricity. Hydrogen fuel cell cars are also quiet (similar to an electric vehicle), very energy efficient, have zero emissions and have equivalent range and performance to their gasoline counterparts. However, these types of cars still haven’t gained popularity despite these advantages. This is because more research still needs to go into this new emerging technology. Advancements still needed to be made in order for FCVs (Fuel Cell Vehicles) to be successful and competitive alternatives for consumers. Things such as onboard hydrogen storage, fuel cell durability and reliability, readily available refueling stations, and of course vehicle cost need to be addressed.1 In the long run however, the advantages of Fuel Cell Vehicles will outweigh the costs.     Hydrogen has some pros that you cannot say no to, such as highly reducing the carbon emissions because it is pure and making a safer environment. But hydrogen does have some cons too. Hydrogen isn’t always clean to produce. It’s expensive to pull hydrogen from water.     A fuel-cell car that produces its hydrogen directly from gasoline had a lot of merit. The system was dependent on the viability of a process called "on-board reforming." Hydrogen is made commercially from oil or natural gas. The fossil fuel is combined with water in a "reforming" reactor, producing mainly hydrogen and carbon dioxide. (No, you can't get completely away from that stuff, only hope to minimize its production.)
