This article focuses on how the gasoline engine is unlikely to be replaced by ethanol, hydrogen or electric powered engines anytime soon, contrary to what the media has everyone believing (333). For example, car companies are redesigning the electric car model to be more aerodynamic so the cars can fit smaller batteries in them but are still able to last a whole day’s driving. Specifically, technology has magnified our vision of automobiles. From luxury features to safety features, many things, such as heated seats and voice activation systems, have come from the many years of research and the testing of new technologies. I sincerely believe that with the help of new technologies, a safer and more economical environment has been created. With the inventions of hybrids, flex fuels, and components such as night vision, parking assist, and blind spot sensors, drivers are provided with cleaner and more fuel efficient alternatives, with the added benefit of safety. In fact, the Economist newspaper states that, “Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles promise to be the cleanest mode of transportation, eliminating harmful tailpipe emissions altogether” (Economist). Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, but only recently have people been able to harness this resource and turn it into energy. Hydrogen fuel cell cars are one such advancement made in the effort to turn hydrogen gas into electricity. Fuel cells in the car are used to convert hydrogen into an electrical current, and thus power the vehicle. Fuel cells convert hydrogen and oxygen into water while producing electricity. Hydrogen fuel cell cars are also quiet (similar to an electric vehicle), very energy efficient, have zero emissions and have equivalent range and performance to their gasoline counterparts. However, these types of cars still haven’t gained popularity despite these advantages. This is because more research still needs to go into this new emerging technology. Advancements still needed to be made in order for FCVs (Fuel Cell Vehicles) to be successful and competitive alternatives for consumers. Things such as onboard hydrogen storage, fuel cell durability and reliability, readily available refueling stations, and of course vehicle cost need to be addressed.1 In the long run however, the advantages of Fuel Cell Vehicles will outweigh the costs. While natural gas has had a direct negative effect on the Ozone Layer, scientists have found an element that allegedly causes no additional threat to global warming, hydrogen fuel cells. The negative effects that oil has had on the environment have been a major factor in the manufacturing of cars that contain hydrogen fuel cells. Recently, multiple car dealerships have begun manufacturing cars that contain replacements of the internal combustion engine with hydrogen fuel cells. Jim Motavalli, editor of E. Magazine, writes, “A hydrogen car emits no pollution or global warming gases, aside from what might have resulted from producing the hydrogen itself,” (105).
