Humor In The Miller's Tale
The Canterbury Tales is a collection tales, and there is a contest to see who could tell the

best story. There are so many great tales in this book and it is a very hard decision to pick

who's is the best. Most people in this world like comedy, and the Millers tale fit right in with

the comedy section. Another thing is that people usually do not like very long tales, the

Millers tale was not insanely long either. The Miller should win the contest for the best tale

because his tale was funny, interesting, and had very compelling characters. These are the

three reasons Why the Miller had the best tale and should win this contest.

There are many ways to make a tale funny, and there are many people that think thingare

Usually stories have only

have one humor going on whether that be stupid humor, jokester humor, accidental humor, or

just any kind of humor throughout the tale. Well in this tale, the Miller (the one telling the tale)

would probably be in the range of accidental humor. It just turned out to be that his take was

funny and he was acting funny.

First of all the Miller was drunk when he told the the tale, and everyone knows how drunk

people act, they are pretty funny. Just imagine if u were at a contest or an event, and the

announcer says next up is the Miller. Then you look over and see a potbelly drunk guy waddling

up to the stage then he starts to talk and he is slurring his words and is so drunk that he can not

even stand up straight, most people would agree that it is funny.

This tale was very interesting and I think most normal people can agree upon. So there is a

guy named John and Nicholas. John had this dashing, hit eighteen year old wife that Nicholas

had the hots for as would any other man at that time. Well, John had to leave for for a little bit,

so that means Nicholas and Johns sexy wife were alone. Everyone provably knows what John

Now listening to this story u might think that

Johns friend is a player or the man. Well after she stats yelling, Nicholas starts to cry like a child

cause he does not want John to find out! After reading that, everyone's perspective for

Nicholas probably changed.

Another thing that made this story even more interesting than it already was, is that when

Nicholas started to cry like a little girl. You would think that the wife would not care and would

want him get in trouble for what he did. But since the hit wife is stupid, she felt bad for him

when he was crying. She was just grabbed by him and now she feels sorry for him just does not

make since. So her next though was is that she wanted to sleep with him, totally denying the

fact that she is already married. But, there is a problem with that statement, how is she going

to sleep with him when she is already married to John, she would have to sneak around so John

would not find out.

This tale just keeps on getting more interesting and more interesting. So there plan to get

together without John knowing was to lie about a vision. Nicholas made up this vision that

John decides to invite Steven, so that the latter would keep his wife company while he is gone to help his father before a huge storm hits. Ann however, is dissatisfied with John because she feels that he does not show her enough attention. She is, however, being hypocritical when she says: "It isn't right to leave me here alone. Surely I'm as important as your father."(136/435) John's father is an elderly man who can really use some help before a huge storm. Ann on the other hand is being selfish by demanding John to stay with her. Ann's dissatisfaction further continues when she sarcastically mentions: "Plenty to eat - plenty of wood to keep me warm - what more could a woman ask for?"(136/435) Furthermore, she feels that John, "a slow, unambitious man, content with his farm and cattle, naively proud of Ann"(137/436), is not exciting and she does not agree with his plans for their future. Ann wants to enjoy life while she is still young, while John wants to work as much as possible to rid himself of all debts and to be able to provide his wife with anything that she desires. He worked from sunrise to sunset to "prove his devotion and fidelity"(138/438), but this is not what she wanted and ironically all this hard work and devotion led to Ann cheating on him.…

The narrator says, "And her birth was smirched to say the least; being the daughter of a celibate priest…" (109). "The Reeve 's Tale" greatly involves the sins of violence, adultery, and thievery. However, "The Miller 's Tale" concentrates more on the gullibility and ignorance of the carpenter. The carpenter of "The Miller 's Tale" is an old man, who is easily deceived due to his gullibility. Nicholas reassures Alison, "A scholar doesn 't have to stir his wits so much to trick a carpenter" (91). The reeve in "The Miller 's Tale" can be described as merely a naïve old man rather than a sinner like the miller in "The Reeve 's…

John was a secretive man in a sense. He never really told anyone how he felt. He was cold. We see how cold he is when other characters ask him how he feels, or if anything is wrong. When Jess asks him a question like this, the reply she receives is "Nothing's the matter, ... Everything's okay. Everything's all right." (Laurence, pg. 195) He's secretive and cold about his emotions and he won't let anyone in. Even when he cries, if someone reaches out to him, he pulls back. We are shown an example of this when John is crying once. "But when I tried to put an arm around him, he pulled away, clattered upstairs to his own room and locked the door." (Laurence, pg. 131) John is portrayed as being cold and secretive with his emotions.…

Both the “Miller’s Tale” and the “Nun’s Priest’s Tale” in the Canterbury Tales, written by Geoffrey Chaucer, can be categorized as comedy. As defined in the Oxford dictionary, comedy is a form of professional entertainment consisting of jokes and sketches, intended to make an audience laugh. However, it may be confusing for some audiences when they find another definition of the word comedy. Also as defined by the Oxford dictionary, comedy is a category of theater characterized by its humorous or satirical tone and its depiction of amusing people or incidents, in which the characters ultimately triumph over adversity. The first definition is broad and fails to characterize the complexity of the comedy found in the Canterbury Tales. The second…
