In East of Eden it is clearly shown that when given the chance humans will usually pick the evil road; however, when they do so they always justify their actions.…
has made me look at American people through the lens of an outsider. Although I moved here when I was young, and I am currently a U.S. citizen, I still fail to understand some aspects of the logic of the American people. I have merged my Bosnian culture with bits and pieces of American culture to become who I am today, however, my culture predominantly focuses on my Bosnian heritage. In all the years that I have lived here, I have discovered that Americans believe they are supreme. You may ask, “Why do they believe this?” It is because it is what they have been told and what they have come to believe after hearing it so many times. Americans are very focused on themselves. We have the best economy, the richest people, the nicest houses, the best cars, the smartest people, and the most advanced technology, so why shouldn’t we be labeled as “the best.” If everyone acted like Americans, then perhaps the world would be a better place. However, it appears that this is not the case. Horace Miner’s article and Laura Bohannan’s story proves us all wrong. We are not the best and we are not as logical as we think we…
America is filled with “people from different nations, accustomed to different life forms and habits of government…” (Paine). For instance, when you look at schools in America today, you can see the diversity of cultures and races. One person may be from Kenya and another student could be from India. Yet we all get along under the same government and the same…
In our humanity, violence is a great flaw. Violence is the reason why we humans caused suffering to this planet and to each other. Greed, revenge and envy are 3 of the 7 deadly sins that are most of the time expressed through violence. But at the very beginning of the sins, we started it through our anger that we cannot control. For example: revenge is caused by anger, envy is jealousy and greed can be caused by fear. Fear is an emotion that is used as basic survival mechanism, but has also proven that it can lead to an act of violence. The Bet by Anton Chekhov, the Hobbyist by Fredric Brown and Lock and Key by Rush have shown great example that emotional human behavior is one the greatest flaw of humanity.…
Xunzi is a philosopher that theorized “Human nature is evil: its goodness derives from conscious activity” (Xunzi). Xunzi’s theory implies that if one were to perform a good moral action, it was because they were scared of punishment or the loss that they might incur. He believes that they do not perform a good moral action because they primarily want to, but because they are scared of the consequences of ones actions. Mengzi is another philosopher that…
Death is a way to either end their miserable existence or fearful that they may die before they are able to compensate for their past…
Since the creation of the world, humans have been falling into darkness and evil, as displayed in stories like Adam and Eve. All humans-beings have the potential to become evil, which usually comes from self-centered wants. When people go down the path of doing whatever it takes to get what they want, they end up hurting others along the way. Evil tempts everyone on a daily basis, but it is the choice whether to reject temptation or give in that exemplifies who someone is. When humans repel evil, the good shows through and their actions have a positive impact. Surrendering to evil is the easy way out, but will lead to darkness and destruction, and make it almost impossible to find a way back to the light.…
America, the land of opportunity, has allowed many people to become successful and fulfill the “American Dream.” The freedom that the United States gives to its people allows individuals to become successful, as they desire, without any limits set on how wealthy or influential they may be. Over time many people of the United States have taken advantage of the freedoms given for the good, but many for the bad. After large success comes, a lot of power in the ability to influence others comes as well. The influence of the powerful and selfish leaders in the United States is continuously increasing, which furthermore negatively affects the future of this country and puts the focus on the great country America used to be rather than the current condition of the country.…
Throughout human history, people have shown through many ways that they possess the ability to exude pure evil (or some form of it). There are a few exceptions to this vile display, however it is nearly impossible to deny that everyone possesses it. I believe that humans are bad because they attempt/commit acts of murder and violence (and in some severe cases genocide) and are obsessed with power and self-improvement.…
Evil people do evil things: that statement seems simple enough. However, the motives behind evil acts tend to be more complex than that simplistic thought. Although some may believe that any dishonesty is evil, people are not inherently evil, and acts that may be considered evil are not deliberate. More likely, they occur because of the denial of private responsibility through the pursuit of self-gain.…
Evil can be used in two ways- when someone has done evil and when someone has suffered evil. Since God is good, God does no moral evil; however, because God is just, God punishes the wicked and thus causes the evil of punishment. People are the cause of their own evildoing. Furthermore, because learning is good a thing, we do not learn evil. It is people’s inordinate desires that drive their evildoings.…
action may not be killing someone, we tend to be aggressive when anger takes over. The act of school shootings, robberies, fights, words of hate, these being just a few examples of societies monster of anger. Though at the end anger did not prevail, it was demolished with courage. Resulting in anger being brought on by someone of lower intelligence than an individual who refused to take…
We are the ones who determine what happens in the United States. We will soon be able to make change through our votes. Right now, it's time for positive changes. If we all took a moment to step out of our comfort zone, we would realize we are all just people. If we took the time to learn about different religions and cultures, people will realize that humans are not very different from each other. When this happens, leaders with positive influences will be created, and people will understand and appreciate each other's differences. There will be some ignorant people along the way that do not want to change their beliefs. This should not stop us. We must push past these obstacles and unite together.…
Survival of the fittest can make people change and become greedy and selfish even to kill someone for getting what they want, “all of a sudden, this pleasant and intelligent young man had changed. His eyes were shining with greed.”, “what would you like? That I break your teeth by smashing your face?” this is what Franck an officer of the camp had said to threatened Elie because…
In our minds, we think that we would never get so fearful and paranoid that we would turn on each other and start to attack each other, all due to the paranoia. Well, we don’t know ourselves to well, then. In the teleplays [Rod Serling’s “Monsters are due on Maple Street” and its 2003 remake “The Monsters on Maple Street”] it tells that we would turn on each other and attack, just out of fear. The claim both stories try to get across is fear of the unknown can cause people to turn on each other. Sadly, under circumstances that are abnormal, we people may get suspicious of each other, which leads to our downfall.…
