He believed that all humans are derived from evil, as virtuality is only created when people actively attempt to be righteous. It is concluded that without guidance, humans cannot be virtuous. In the beginning of the book, Jack tells his hunters that he hasn’t been successful in catching and killing a pig because he needed camouflage. He creates a mask and abandons the fire, the boys’ only hope of getting rescued off the island and back to civilization. “[Jack] spilt the water and leapt to his feet, laughing excitedly. Beside the pool his sinewy body held up a mask that drew their eyes and appalled them. He began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling... the mask was a thing on its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness,” ()The author purposely included the words “liberated” and “bloodthirsty” to draw attention to how much the mask is relieving Jack of his person that was morally right. When he became the tribe leader, all of the boys wore masks as well as they carried out horrible, vile actions, such as creating ‘the Lord of the Flies’, hunting Ralph, and killing Simon and Piggy. Because of the mask, they felt no remorse. Furthermore, Jack had drawn the mask on himself. He is giving himself validation to be that savage that has always been inside him. Although some might say that some savages did not don masks such as Sam and Eric, the mask is only a source of attestation to what humans fundamentally want. Despite not sporting masks, Sam and Eric still choose the evil within when they join Jack’s

“In The Cemetery where Al Jolson is buried” by Amy Hempel uses the word masks throughout the story to convey guilt, fear and unacceptance of death. The first mention of the word mask is in the beginning of the story. We are just beginning to understand that Hempel is describing two people in a hospital, the narrator is visiting her friend who is sick. They are both wearing masks, the narrator checks to make sure that she is still breathing and that she is not “ used to the mask yet.” The friend has her mask hanging loose, a “pro by now.” The fact that the narrator describes her friend at being a “pro” and the fact that the narrator is not used to her masks, tells us that the narrator has not been to visit before.…

The mask is a form of deception or illusion. Sometimes, it can be worn as both. It hides the true emotions of slaves, keeping the slave master from knowing what is going on in their minds. The mask also allows the slave to have an identity without the master's detection. The mask gives the illusion that the slave is exactly how the masters believe, ignorant, incapable of true emotion, and unable to think for themselves.…

Face Paint is used as a mask by the boys when they are hunting, it works as a mask for them to hide behind and makes their gruesome killing for pleasure seem more like a game than an actual act of cruelty. The boys hide their identities by covering their faces with paint, and wearing so called ‘masks’. When Jack and his gang cover themselves with paint they suddenly turn to savages. As they paint their faces they become different people, the paint hides their old identities and creates new ones. “Beside the pool his sinewy body held up a mask that drew their eyes and appalled them. He began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling. He capered toward Bill, and the mask was a thing on its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness. The face of red and white and black swung through the air and jigged toward Bill” (70). This quote is an excellent example of how the mask takes over Jack’s normal identity and turns him into an inhumane, animal-like creature.…

Jack is speaking to Roger in this instance as he first thinks up the idea to cover himself in clay and charcoal sticks because he believes that the only reason he is not successfully killing any pigs is because they see him too quickly. Jacks mask not only changes his appearance but also his personality. “He began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling […] the mask was a thing of its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness.” (Golding 64) With the mask on his face, Jack was no longer the leader of the choir instead he was a sage hunter. Later on in the novel, almost all the boys want to have their faces painted as well “They understood only too well the liberation into savagery that the concealing paint brought.” (Golding 172) The mask represents the evil within each and every boy who had their face painted. In other words, it portrays the savage within. It does not hide the children’s true nature; it rather reveals…

Right from the beginning of the novel, the reader, can indicate that Jack has neither respect nor compassion towards the remaining survivors. From the first chapter, before even meeting any of the other boys, Jack’s words to Piggy, “You’re talking too much,” said Jack Merridew. “Shut up, Fatty.” (Golding 21) shows the fact that he doesn’t care about hurting anyone. As the novel continues Jack’s attitude does not get any better. While some of the boys are trying to keep order on the island, Jack is only concerned about hunting and killing. Jack becomes so possessed by his desire to kill that he doesn’t realize, at one point of the novel, that he is moments away from killing a “littlun”. Also, after the death of Simon, the boys think the “beastie” is gone. With Jack’s drive to keep seniority, he lies to the boys so they will think the beast is still there by stating, “No! How could we kill it" (Golding 146), giving the boys the uneasy feeling that the nonexistent beast is still alive and or out in the woods. Without a doubt, this shows how Jack becomes compassionless and cold hearted to the rest of the boys on the island due to his strive for dominance.…

Jack is not the only one who becomes a bloodthirsty Neanderthal over the course of the boys’ stay on the island. In one scene, Jack decides that he needs more boys and enlists the help of the twins to kill a pig. This would be fine, if not a little obsessive, if it were not for the fact that the twins were currently in charge of keeping the fire lit. They wanted to protest and stay with the fire, but Jack had painted his face in hopes of camouflaging more easily, and the mask that he had painted “compelled them (pg.…

Hsun Tzu's philosophy is built from the idea that human beings are by nature inherently evil, and the good they produce will only come through their conscious activity. Hsun Tzu believes that if man follows his nature and indulges in his natural desires, without transforming himself by conscious activity he is doomed to fall victim to his evil nature. "Any man who follows his nature will inevitably become involved in wrangling and strife, will violate the forms and rules of society, and will end as a criminal." Despite the pessimistic tone of Hsun Tzu's message he does propose conscious activity as a solution to man's evil. This paper will examine Hsun Tzu's perspective in light of both Mencius and Lao Tzu, and the path it proposes for man to raise from his evil nature and become good.…

The term Philosophy, according to the definition provided by Wikipedia, is “the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected with existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. From the establishment of human civilizations, people started asking themselves about the underlying truths of the world. Among those questions they delved into, the question about the human nature – whether humans are good or evil by nature – grasped many philosophers’ interest. For this question, many western and eastern philosophers came up with their own unique explanations for the human nature. Among those uncountable philosophers, Xunzi and Thomas Hobbes are the most prominent philosophers who advocated the innate evilness of human beings; and Mencius, along with Jean-Jacque Rousseau, is the one most frequently referred to when talking about innate goodness of human beings.…
