Human Nature Essay
What drives us to do the things we do as humans. This ranges from the way we act to separate our selves from others to our undying need for self-recognition. We do many things that we know are wrong but this knowledge is overpowered by our need for individuality and our acts of deviance contribute to our character and are just a part of our human nature. Many things play a part in the overall theme of human nature ranging from individuality and deviance all the way to believing what we are told to be the truth by other humans. Individuality plays a critical role in human nature. We as people always try to do things that separate us from others. We receive significant gratification when were told we are the best of best at something as well as when we do something more impressive then just one other person. As much as we don’t like to admit we always strive to be better then everyone else at everything we do. Sometimes we even make up stories to lead others to believe that we are better then we truly are. For example, in Coffee and Cigarettes there is a sketch in which a musician tries to play himself off as a doctor who just preformed a tracheostomy on the side of a road in order to save a mans life (Director: Jim Jarmusch, 2003). This was right after his friend questioned his relevance and talent, which caused him to respond with a lie to make himself seem greater and of more importance to the world. He had to make up a lie in order to momentarily gain self-esteem and seem “cooler” in front of his friend. However his friend picked up on the lie but didn’t say anything in order to not be mean and socially acceptable. The way we act in order to get attention and make our selves’ feel of greater value is also an important characteristic of human nature. We all lash out whether it’s to gain attention or to seem dominant. Every time we lash out we try to find excuses in order to seem cool talking back but also not
