Human Fallacy In Coriolanus The King
The play Coriolanus contrasts the idea that politics are the governing factor, and in fact prove that human fallacy is the ultimate cause of Rome's downfall. The play discusses a democracy, but then proves it to be faulty. The play, therefore, is governed by human fallacy such as the Tribunes' manipulative skills, as well as the fickle nature of the Plebeians. Thus, Coriolanus, to a large extent, is governed by human fallacy and not politics.
Coriolanus proves to diverge from Shakespeare's standard form of writing, in the fact that politics, is not a governing factor (unlike his previous plays). Rome is experiencing a "fledgling demorcracy", which is proved to be unsuccessful. This failure can be attributed to the idea that the democracy is, in fact, unfair, seen in multiple instances when the Tribunes oppose lawfully correct actions, for example persuading the Plebeians to act against Coriolanus, which inevitably led to his and their downfall. Another example that proves politics to be of low importance is Coriolanus's reluctance towards being Consul. This shows that honour is placed above political ranking.

They have learnt to manipulate a crowd to their own advantage. For example, they urged the crowd to agree with Coriolanus's death, so that they could appear ethical when suggesting his banishment instead. Their humble facade allow their intentions to appear good, but rather do more damage than help. Coriolanus himself recognised their masks when saying "In soothing them, we nourish 'gainst our senate. The cockle of rebellion, insolence, sedition, which we ourselves have plough'd for, sow'd and scatter'd". This shows that the Tribunes in fact are an example of human fallacy, to such an extent that other characters recognise

    This is most explicitly demonstrated in the line, “You can see the country is praying God to send someone to save her from the cruelty and barbarity of these foreigners,” where Machiavelli personifies Italy to persuade Lorenzo de Medici that he has the potential to assist him in uniting his nation, increasing Machiavelli’s social standing in the process.     Cassius admits that Caesar is treated like a god and recalls events of Caesar’s physical weakness. Caesar was a powerful man who planned to become the supreme ruler of the Roman Empire in order to solve the many economic, political and military problems the empire was against.     The story of Coriolanus is a very unique Tragedy, for instance unlike other Shakespeare tragidies where the plays are littered with deaths; in Coriolanus, Coriolanus is the only character to die. This is not the only reason, I believe, that separates Coriolanus from all of Shakespeare’s other tragidies: Coriolanus is the most unique tragic hero, when compared to all the other tragic heroes Shakespeare has written about. Unlike most of Shakespeare’s tragic heroes there is no inner complexity to Coriolanus; he is seen completely from the outside, by the reader, as written by Sailendra’s article What Happens in Coriolanus, "Coriolanus, then, is a character not inwardly evolved, as the greater tragic characters are, but seen from without." (pg 331). This is exemplified through the fact that Coriolanus has no soliloquies in the play. This is extremely odd considering he is the main protagonist in the play and is considered a Tragic Hero. Coriolanus is truly unique in the fact that everything we learn about him is a result of another character; the most obvious example being his pride and rage, brought on by Brutus and Sicinius, and their plots against him. Similar to other Tragic Heroes Coriolanus is easily manipulated and persuaded by other characters in the play. Just like Macbeth was persuaded by Lady Macbeth to murder the King and take over as King of Scotland, Coriolanus was persuaded by Volumnia to run for Council. A significant difference between Coriolanus and Macbeth being that Macbeth ended up truly wanting to become King, and the ambitions Lady Macbeth had for him soon became his own; unlike in Coriolanus, where through-out the play it was never really evident that Coriolanus wanted any political power.
