Human Condition In John Steinbeck's The Woods Runner
In the novel Woods Runner, Samuel gets help from many people during his journey to find his parents. Human condition means how a person lives, their characteristics, and who they are. Who helps Samuel on his journey, how do they help him? The people that help him during his adventure to find his parents are, the Clark family, Abner, and Matthew. They help him by giving him food, letting him rest, treating his injuries and giving him helpful information about the war that may help him find his parents. Do any of these people help Samuel survive and look for his parents? Or will he lose his family forever?

“He needs help, Samuel said get him into the cabin, please help him. Matthew pulled him into the boat then helped Samuel’s mother onto the boat and into the cabin as well. Abner jumped in and Matthew pulled up the sail, which filled in the freshening breeze. He said to Samuel push off as you come aboard” (136) This proves that Matthew helped Samuel save his family because in the quote it says that Matthew helped him by getting his family onto the boat and in the cabin he is trying to save them from the British. Earlier Matthew had asked Samuel to hit a soldier with a rock and when Samuel did they got his father and brought him to the boat. “I thought I killed him! He raised the alarm. It matters not at all. We're away from the light. The torches won't cast out here. Besides their looking in all directions… It was a good fortune. Fortune's favor the well prepared.
