Each person has a unique set of DNA. It is what make us who we are, but what happens when we experiment on our DNA? Cloning is the process of replacing the DNA of an egg with the DNA of a living organism. In 1997 the first living clone was created, which brought various questions about the cloning of humans. The main purpose of our reproductive system is to create new life, but we have subjected it, specifically human eggs, to experimentation. Human cloning is a direct violation of what makes us who we are, our DNA. By learning more about the complications of cloning and how scientists are using human eggs for experiments, we can understand that cloning should only be used on animals. Stem cells are the cells in embryos that would develop into a person or animal. By studying these cells, scientists believe they can discover medical treatments, but at the expense of human eggs. The Stemagen company in San Diego is a stem cell research facility, which has claimed to be the first to take mature human cells to create cloned embryos. The company stated that out of the twenty-nine eggs donated by women, five embryos developed into a stage called blastocysts where stems cells are derived from for research, but no stem cells were studied. The scientists were unable to obtain cells from the blastocyst, and all the eggs and embryos were lost. While cloning could provide answers for medical treatments, it is at the expense of numerous human eggs. The reproductive system’s sole purpose is to bring in new life. Human eggs should not be used for the sick experimentation of cloning that will only produce mediocre results for research. Scientists continue to be unsuccessful in their stem cell research of human clones. Why do we continue to experiment on human eggs when they can’t even fully clone our distant cousin, the monkey? If we continue to allow scientists to experiment on human eggs they eventually succeed in their stem cell research, and they will eventually be tempted to create the first living human clone. There are multiple benefits of animal cloning. Scientists would have the ability to save an endangered species. The Enderby Island in New Zealand had a depleting breed of cattle. The last surviving cow had to be preserved through cloning. Semen was also conserved and the breed could slowly recuperate. Without cloning, the breed would have become extinct; however, because there was a lack of cows, it brought a new problem of inbreeding. Inbreeding causes animals to have health issues, but through cloning, inbreeding could be avoided. If there would have been a larger group of the cattle on the Enderby Island, then we could have preserved samples of each cow. This would allow scientists to have more of a variety for the genetics used for cloning. Through cloning, endangered species of animals will have a greater chance of survival. Attempting to save a species as minor as the cattle breed in New Zealand would only cause inbreeding and produce a sick species. Cloning ensures that it not only can save the species, but that it can avoid inbreeding and rebuild the species. This need for cloning causes a necessity for scientists to continue to improve their cloning capabilities. While scientists wouldn’t be able to use cloning for human medical purposes, they can still use it for the entire animal kingdom.
