Human capital is the collective value of the capabilities, knowledge, skills, life experiences, and motivation of an organization’s workforce. It is also known as intellectual capital which is the knowledge, creativity, and decision making that people contribute in an organization (Zinni et al, 2011). Many companies focus far too much on measuring return on invested capital (ROIC) rather than measuring the contributions made by their talented employees (Bryan, 2007). Organizations should realize the importance of human assets and how they can be used to predict the corporate performance and remain competitive in their specific industry.…

Many literatures have been written and argued on Human Resource Management (HRM) in the past dated as early as in 1960’s. However, only since two decades ago, the whole culture of human resource management changed drastically due to extensive influence of internet, wireless connection and Steve Job. The Idea of Human Capital

Human Capital affects our everyday life. It does not discriminate against anyone no matter what race or part of the world you are in. People blinded by human capital can have a mislead future. David Brook states: “But skills and knowledge-the stuff you can measure with tests-is only the most superficial component of human capital. U.S. education reforms have generally failed because they try to improve the skills of students without addressing the underlying components of human capital” (The Longman Reader) (210). Human capital is more than just having a genius I.Q. or attending an Ivy League school. Our other factors in life help dictate a person’s skills and knowledge for what it takes to get the job. Society and the marketplace is focused on education, but not anyone’s social skills or morals that come hand and hand with dealing with the responsibilities of the any job. I will be addressing how just because a Master’s Degree listed on a resume’ does not make a person the right one for the job. What if a person has been on a job for fifteen plus years that was grandfathered in their position, now all of a sudden has to step down to let that person with the degree take the position and does not know how to say good morning or use Microsoft office. This is what brings us back to “We now spend more per capita on education than just about any other country on earth, and the results are mediocre” David Brooks stated in his essay on Psst! “Human Capital.”…

The rhetoric of getting good grades in school will get you into a good college and get you a great job then a happy and wealthy life, is familiar to most people who ever experienced a primary and secondary education. What is this rhetoric referring to? This rhetoric is referring to an economic purpose of schooling, particularly the Human Capital Theory. Joel Spring, in his book American Education (2016), defines Human Capital Theory is that with investment in education within a community, that community will have more wealth returned to that community (p. 90). Human Capital Theory dates back as far as the 19th century, since then it has been used to justify political and economic goals of schooling. In this paper, I will look at both the political…
