Human Behavior and Enviorment
Hello Prof. and Classmates

There are many life events that have encouraged or played a part in the decision to become a part of the Human service field, the most influential one is a recent move from my home town Anchorage, AK to Washington and second would be a close friends experience with addiction.
My recent move to Washington where my twin sister was up until recently had me searching for hope and strength. I am a single mother of three children and moving was the furthest thing from my mind, but my twin sister bragged and boosted about how great Washington was and I knew I needed an opportunity to start over fresh, due to some personal issues. I moved without having a job lined up hoping that I could get a job at the hospital my sister worked for (not something I would normally do) knowing that I had saved some money prior to moving after several attempts of Appling for jobs through the hospital and no prospects I started to get worried I was not going to get a job. Money was going fast between food, rent, daycare and gas I was not sure what to do, so I went to the local public assistance office in search of resources available to individual in the area (jobs, daycare, medical ECT.) I just needed a little bit of help until I got a job. Not being familiar with the system I was not quite sure what to do and how to do it, so I sat and waited for an interview with a social worker/case worker to find out, needless to say the experience was not a good one. I remember the day as if it were yesterday, the social worker was not very friendly and never even made eye contact with me basically talking down to me and treating me as if I had walked into her office asking her for a personal hand out. I did not even want to be there and by the time the interview was over I was crying and felt worthless after going through that experience and waiting two months before I would get any help I decided I was going to become a social worker. I could only imagine how many

The experience that had a big impact on my life is going to medical camp. The medical camp was held at our local hospital. The camp allowed me to tour the hospital and speak to workers in various positions throughout the hospital. To get into the program I had to write an essay and have a GPA of 3.5 or better. At camp I was the youngest and the only African American there. While there it opened up my eyes to many other jobs in the hospital that interested me. Prior to going I wanted to be a Pediatrician, but while attending I found two other professions that interest me. The first profession is Occupational Therapy. Occupational Therapy is for people who go through surgery or get into an accident and try to relearn activities of daily living…

With a strong interest in child welfare, there was no question that my interview with a social worker would involve someone who is involved in this area of practice. I did a small amount of internet research and discovered the All Nations Coordinated Response Network (ANCR) in Winnipeg. I discovered that within the Child and Family Services system this agency is generally the first point of contact. With an interest in front line work, I decided to make contact with this agency in hopes of scheduling an interview. I made a phone call to ANCR and spoke to a receptionist with the agency about what I was looking to accomplish. I was more specific than I had originally planned and requested a recent graduate for the interview if possible. I did this in hopes of gaining a better insight of what a career will be like when I, myself am completed university. I was told I would receive a call back within a few days and was excited when I heard from Sophia, a 2011 Bachelor of Social Work graduate from the University of Manitoba. When I spoke with her, I knew she was exactly the person that I wanted to interview. Not only was she working in a career which I am interested in, she was fairly new to this agency but also had experience with another organization that worked with children and their families. I was very interested in hearing her responses and points of view being that she was new to social work practice only a few years ago. Sophia explained to me her current position was a child abuse investigator and her prior position was a family group conference coordinator. With so many options in social work practice, I was very curious as to how she decided what she wanted to do and what prompted her to move from one agency to another.…

I really liked reading your post. I also thought about working in a private practice setting. I think that working in a small setting, there is a lot more job security. Working in a high-populated setting means that there is a lot of competition in order to progress at work. I love competition, but I really don’t want to be in competition with about twenty-five other social workers. You have a lot of experience. I have barley even been alive for twenty years. I think that your experience will be very useful in social work. At my practicum, I work in a cubical and make dozens of phone calls a day. I rally don’t like to work in a cubical, I love doing field work, its when we visit peoples homes and actually talk to people in their settings. I…

One goes to college, usually around the age of eighteen, and by the time they leave they are expected to have decided on the career that they will have for the rest of their lives. I want to have the ability to touch people 's lives by helping them understand themselves and why they behave the way in which they behave. Relationships are such an important aspect to the process of human growth, and they impact each and every one of us. Due to this assessment of myself, I have decided to go to Western Michigan University to pursue my goals of being a clinical social worker.…

The area of human services in which I would most like to work is with the homeless. Besides having my own personal experiences with homelessness, I think that it is an ongoing issue in the United States that needs community and governmental assistance. With the economy being in a state of recession, the rate of homelessness is continuing to increase with no sign of slowing down. People are losing their incomes leading them to losing their homes. While some are able to downsize to a smaller place that is more affordable for themselves and their families, there are others that are unable to secure a place to live and have resorted to either living with relatives, in motels or even worse, shelters.…

My life has been the “event” and the “experiences” that have led me to the choice to pursue a career in social work! I was raised in a narcissist family in which my mother never was capable of loving me due to her mental illnesses and a father whom was an abuser. I learned to “survive” at a very young age and also developed a deep intuitive ability. I wanted that “perfect” family that I had so longed for my whole life and at 19 became a mother. I was bound and determined not to repeat anything that my mother or father had done. By the time I was 21, my son and I were living in a domestic violence shelter. I had left everything and everyone to get away from this abuse both mental and physical. My father had broken my nose and I couldn’t tolerate the abuse any longer. I continued to work with the women’s center while going through therapy and spoke at telethons to raise money. Typically, when people think of DV they don’t think of a parent abusing their children, I was determined to raise awareness. I also was fortunate enough to go to college on full scholarship through a great foundation called the “Sunshine Lady Foundation” in which they help women who were victims of Domestic Violence.…
