Hum/111 to Drill or Not to Drill Week 2
To Drill or Not to Drill? Student Name HUM/111 26Sept2012 Instructor Name

My Position The question is whether or not to drill to best meet our energy needs. I really do not lean more one way or the other. I am more of the person who finds it available I will purchase it. For example, when our televisions went digital over analog I went out and purchased the digital cable that was necessary in order to watch my television. Analog was no longer available so I went out and purchased what was available. I am the same way when concerning saving energy. Just like everyone else I will purchase what is available. If oil ceases to be available because people decide to shut it down then I will purchase the alternative in order for what I need to work to work. I guess if I had to choose one over the other I would choose to continue to drill. The amount of jobs that will be lost in this country as a result of trying to save energy is tremendous. Over 12,000 people in the US alone will lose jobs (www.noia.org). Not to mention there are now colleges that offer training to get into the oil and gas industries (The Edge, Community college to train for oil, gas jobs p13A). In this economy we should be working on saving and creating jobs. Once our economy is better we can work on how we can make it better. My Blocks The perceptual block and habit that hinder my thinking when looking at the opposing view would be Self-Deception. Self-deception is the act or an instance of deceiving oneself (www.thefreedictionary.com). This is considered one of the

A issue in my life that I felt was distressing was when I started being around my brother more and we get along find but he likes to drink a lot and it causes problems between us sometimes. I see this as a problem that can turn into an issue over time if my brother doesn’t understand his mood swings by drinking all the time. Also he really needs to understand the problem and how it affects the people around him that actually do care about him. It’s a problem now because my brother is trying to work on it and get better at socializing with a clear mind. I try to express the problem to my brother in a lot of different ways. I try to identify the problem as he does it or…

Domestic reserves of natural gas beneath the earth’s surface are massive. Gas drilling booms have popped up in numerous states throughout the country-Wyoming, Colorado, North Dakota, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas and Pennsylvania, to name a few. Halliburton Corp. developed a way to mine horizontally. In 1990, boring parallel to the horizontal layers of shale exposed gas deposits, from which Halliburton reaped the profits. There is no denying that America needs alternative fuel sources, and this is one way to ease the demand on foreign oil. Ernest Moniz, director of MIT Energy Initiative, believes natural gas is a bridge to a low-carbon future until alternative sources such as wind, solar and geothermal become more viable. He states natural gas…

It is not easy question regarding whether America should attempt to drill its way out of dependency on foreign oil or to push hard for alternative energies. Many considerations need to be examined; environmental concerns including global warming, employment, big business, and monetary issues including the trade balance, foreign policy, and special interest groups.…

I dare you to make it throughout the day without touching a product associated with oil. Shifting our reliance on foreign fossil fuels to local energy sources in the United States poses many benefits. The oil and gas industry is one of the biggest industries in the United States. Fracking is the process of injecting water, sand and small amounts of chemicals into the ground, causing shale to crack, releasing natural gas. We don’t have a choice; we depend on fossil fuels every day to survive.…

On April 20th, 2010, an oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. As a result, approximately 4.9 billion barrels of oil poured into the gulf over the course of 87 days. This tragedy resulted in lives lost, both human and animal alike, and really brought the issue of off-shore oil drilling to attention. While some may believe that offshore oil drilling may seem like a harmless source of revenue for the United States, it is imperative that citizens realize that drilling does more harm than good. America needs to consider the negative effects of offshore oil drilling on the environment, the economy, and the future.…

In the book Leadership and Self-Deception written by The Arbinger Institute, we come to an understanding that self- deception “...blinds us to the true causes of problems, and once we’re blind, all the “solutions” we can think of will actually make matters worse. Whether at work or at home, self-deception obscures the truth about ourselves, corrupts our views of others and our circumstances, inhibits our ability to make wise and helpful decisions” (Institute, 2010). The book goes on to explain…

I believe that we should just continue drilling off the Gulf Coast, Alaska, and other areas within our country that are currently not being explored. By exploring these other areas and utilizing the resources that are found there, we could decrease our dependency on other countries for oil and natural gas. If the United States could decrease its dependency on foreign countries for oil and natural gas, it could be very beneficial to the U.S. For example, if there were to be a war that breaks out in the future, and we are dependant on that country for oil and natural gas, that country could cut off all supplies to the United States. This would cause a great deal of problems for the U.S., there would be a trickle down affect such as; gas prices would rise, gas stations would close, people would be out of work, and the auto industry would suffer. If the U.S was mainly drilling oil within our country, a war really wouldn’t affect us as much.…

Renewable energy is a debatable issue because on one hand, it could potentially reduce the need to Burn fossil fuels. Burning fossil fuels for energy releases much of the harmful gases that exist today. Scientists estimate that about 35 percent of the greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, being released into the atmosphere are from the United States (Renewable Energy Is Beneficial for the Environment, May 2013). Less fossil fuels being burned the less threat pollution will have on the earth. However, the opposing side feels that in order for renewables to contribute meaningfully to energy production, they would use up vast amounts of land and cause serious environmental damage (Ausubel, Jesse H. Renewable Energy Is Not Beneficial for the Environment, May 2013). I thought I was for the renewable side 100 percent. The reason why I was for it is, it would be healthier for not only humanity but for animals as well. After reading the opposing side I am now split because of how much sense they make. I would have to do more research to actually find the better of the two. The reason I am even debating on wanting the opposing side is because of how much room we would take up building windmills, solar stations, and dams for hydro power. I do feel that solar energy would be the best way just hook up panels to every homes roofs with a battery that can hold a decent charge until the sun come back up to charge them.…

Never would I have thought about some of the topics such as Self Deception. The unique way I have hindered myself is the self-deception that if someone else does a task it is trustworthy. An example is if I take my truck to get something done requiring the wheel be removed, I just trust that the lugs are tight upon being done. However, if I do it at home I would break at least one lug due to over tightening.…
