Exploring The Ideas of Philosophy and Freedom The following essay first introduces the texts Encouraging Learning, by Hsun Tzu, and the text Learning to Read by Frederick Douglas. Their work has significance both in the connection between philosophy, and the linkage between knowledge and freedom, as well as mentions the importance of education and how it can influence and shape an individual’s state of mind. It is important to note that these texts also introduce us to the eight elements of critical thinking. It is crucial that reading must apply the eight elements of critical thinking, as they provide skills that are both analytic thinking and problem-solving. Additionally, Hsun Tzu wrote a text that dives deep into both education and philosophy, while also mentioning the importance of applied studies and discipline. In the text “Encouraging Learning,” Hsun Szu illustrated a question at issue, which was: what could help heal a human nature that is so selfish and inherently evil? The question at issue is an attempt to figure something out and how to solve the problem. It is meant to be stated and engage the reader in critical thinking. Additionally, he also believed that the effect of evil human nature created consequences, which could inherently damage moral principles that keep the social order stable. The consequences mentioned follow the reasoning behind Hsun Tzu’s question, in which he states that devoted study can produce virtue, which means in simple terms the good of humanity. And for this effect to be “cured,” or reverted, he believed that the solution was devoted to study through discipline to prevent the occurrence of evil human nature from ever happening
