Close Study of Text: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time.
Speech Assessment Task

Christopher Boone is often challenged in understanding and relating to the thoughts and feelings of those around him, including his family. His inability to visualise the feelings and thoughts of those that are around him, meaning he cannot empathize. Because, Christopher cannot tell when a person speaks in a joking manner or guess a person’s mood by their facial expressions. This is one of Christopher’s main challenges throughout the novel. In Chapter 3, of the novel, Christopher says that he cannot read faces. So, Siobhan who is his mentor draws him simple diagrams of faces people make to convey their feelings. But, it was still a difficult challenge for Christopher to determine which facial expression went with which diagram, a quote from the novel from page 3 states “It was very difficult to decide which of the diagrams was most like the faces people were making”. The author Mark Haddon uses visual techniques such as, simple diagrams of faces to highlight the audience of how dependant Christopher is on the diagrams to try and communicate with other people. Mark Haddon also helps us understand Christopher’s personal challenge of reading others emotions by displaying imagery. Haddon uses these simple diagrams to emphasise to the readers that “reading people” meaning their facial expressions, which we can take for granted, is in fact a very big struggle for Christopher. People’s body language continually challenges Christopher, which reveals a high level of stress and anxiety in him, which is a daily battle.

The feeling of being a failure as a parent is a great challenge to try and overcome. In the novel, ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time’, Ed Boone has a very positive relationship with his son Christopher.     The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time is a play about love, family, secrets, relationships and being an outsider. My favourite scene was the opening scene in which the audience are plunged into a blackout and then a rectangular white spotlight with sharp edges surrounds a large Alsatian with a garden fork sticking out of it.it is also surrounded by a pool of blood. We saw Christopher (Jack Loxton) staring at the body of the dog, mesmerised, body rigid. His neighbour then screamed and the actor moved downstage and fell to his knees bending forward and rocking back and forth. He also repeatedly bashed his right temple with his hand and mad a disturbing low moaning noise. This use of skilful movement, gesture and voice immediately showed the character’s distress to what had happened. A policeman then came in and so Loxton quickly rose to his feet. As the policeman started questioning him Loxton added a twisting gesture with his fingers to the toggle of his hoodie. This added to how agitated we could see he was. When he spoke he used an intense tone but had a highly articulated delivery which added to the impression that Christopher is on the autistic spectrum as his speech didn’t have the nuances of ‘ordinary’ speech. His physical skills showed us how emotional he was but his intonation was not emotional at all. However, the low moaning sound that he used to punctuate his lines (as indicated in the script) added to our impression of a distressed fifteen year old boy. When the policeman touched Christopher he let out a very loud scream and grabbed the policeman’s arm, flinging him from one side to other which was a highly effective reaction the character’s fear of intimacy and Christopher’s ‘behavioural problems’ (as he calls them) were effectively realised through Loxton’s use of vivid physical and vocal skills in this opening scene.…

    Children are helpless and dependent on their caregivers from the moment they are born. Adolescence is a very confusing point in a young person’s life as they are caught between being a child and a yearning for adulthood. An adolescent may strive for independence, or be forced to mature quickly, but will remain dependent on both their family and society in some way. The effect of this dependency, however, may not always be positive. The main character from Mark Haddon’s novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Christopher John Francis Boone was born with higher functioning autism. This left him vulnerable to the world, in the sense that he would always need to be cared for by others. Astrid Magnussen, from Janet Fitch`s work White Oleander, is forced into foster care when her neglectful mother is taken to jail for murder. She bounces from one foster home to another, always needing but never finding. An adolescent may be aware of their dependency on others or not, however between Christopher’s disability and Astrid losing her only parental figure, that reliance is strengthened.     Firstly, every author has its specific style of approach to the audience, the way Mark has added diagrams in this novel to make it look like this is the way autistic kids write or describe it is very unusual. While explaining the journey of Christopher's life, diagrams are something he uses daily. “First of all I made a plan of our street...like this”(35).In this diagram it shows a bird’s eye view of Christopher's street. It states that Christopher uses diagrams to help him out on whatever he is doing. So in this case Christopher is going to go out and investigate. So to help himself out, he drew a map of his street. Autism can be serious for some people but they have their ways in helping themselves succeed. Such as Christopher uses diagrams. Novels usually explain their plans in a written description whereas in this novel or maybe in an autistic mind it shows illustrations which makes it unusual. Also, “a picture says a thousand words” the author uses these diagrams/pictures which clearly shows a message of the situation. “And then I realized that there was nothing... and I made a picture of it in my head like this”(130). In this diagram it shows a mind map of what choices Christopher has to decide which place would be the safest for him. Most books have words and words and it gets boring, tiring and monotonous.
