“Workforce diversity is a workforce consisting of a broad mix of workers from different racial and ethnic background of different ages and genders, and of different domestic and national culture” (Naik, 2012). The emergency and development of diverse workforce is basically the result of globalisation, which is the current developing trend of the world. To meet the challenge of globalisation, it is extremely necessary for an organisation to have a diversity strategy than a domestic one (Naik, 2012). The diverse strategy enables the organisation to enlarge their customer base and market since the various backgrounds of employees make it much easier to communicate with global customers. Through the years the American workforce has become increasingly diverse; caused in large part by the globalization of the American economy, and the growth of the workforce in the areas of minority, women, and immigrant employment. Traditionally, individuals have been expected to assimilate into the standard way of doing things, accepting the burden of change and adjustment. However, this is no longer the case. This idea has been replaced with a workforce of individuals that instead chooses to maintain their individual identities, placing the burden of adjustment back on the employer. While a fair portion of the changes in cultural and social acceptance comes from the day-to-day activities of societal involvement, this is not enough. To achieve a truly diverse workforce it has been necessary to take the further steps of legislation and cultural awareness training. Although these changes have brought some positive results, whether they have accomplished their long-term goals has yet to be determined.…

Workforce diversity addresses differences among people within an organization. Workforce diversity means that organizations are becoming a more heterogeneous mix of people from different categories. Diversity refers to the co-existence of employees from various socio-cultural backgrounds within the company. Diversity includes cultural factors such as race, gender, age, colour, physical ability, ethnicity, education, language, lifestyle, beliefs, economic status, etc. Diversity requires a type of organizational culture in which each employee can pursue his or her career aspirations without being inhibited by gender, race, nationality, religion, or other factors that are irrelevant to performance. Managing diversity means enabling the diverse workforce to perform its full potential in an equitable work environment where no one group has an advantage or disadvantage. Thus workforce diversity is a complex phenomenon to manage in an organisation. It is argued that organizations that value diversity will definitely cultivate success and have a future in this dynamic global labour market. ABSTRACT Work, workers and workplaces are not what they used to be or where they used to be says Peter F. Drucker in his new book, ―Management Challenges for 21st century‖ which provides insightful and timely information for individual and organizations alike as they work towards common goals in the next one hundred years. Among the eight new assumptions, workforce diversity is placed at the third position in terms of importance. Management being a social discipline deals with the behavior of PEOPLE and HUMAN INSIGHT. Hence, workforce diversity is the biggest challenge and at the same times the biggest opportunity for the 21st century managers. "Diversity Management" is a strategy to promote the perception, acknowledgement and implementation of diversity in organizations. Successful diversity management policy and program will eventually make a huge difference in the communication among employees and the general productivity of the organization. Today‘s organization need to recognize and manage workforce diversity effectively. The main focus of this paper is to empirically assess the relationship between workforce diversity and organization performance. Our main finding is that diversity is either positively associated with productivity or there is no significant relationship between diversity and productivity. We never find a significant negative relationship between establishment-level diversity and productivity. This leads us to conclude that establishments that employ a more diverse workforce are no less productive than establishments that employ a more homogeneous workforce.…
