1. Discuss the trends in the steel industry and how it may impact Nucor’s strategy.
Blast furnaces were the trend for the major steel producers. The arc furnaces adopted by Nucor led to increased production and cost savings. While using less labor, increased production, and was considered the new most cost-effective strategy among the steel industry the new technology took off. It was Nucor’s first to come up with the decision to adopt this process and be the first to introduce this new process to the United States. In the late 90s into the 2000s man steel companies went out of business because of the reduce demand for steel. Instead of building new plants and using funds Nucor chose to buy the failing plants and converting them into their production lineup. This also in many cases was a cheaper route than building new plants. The procurement strategy was one of the best moves because the factories were already setup for steel production at mass quantities and Nucor was able to inherit their ties and partnerships as well as their presence in their surrounding geographical area. The constant drive for efficiency and cost effective production was another strategy chosen to increase competitive advantage, market share, and

    C. In the early of 2000, Nucor followed growth strategies which are new acquisitions, new plants construction, continued plant upgrades and cost reduction efforts, and joint ventures. The strategy had helped the company to overcome the recession time and resulted in a glorious success. However, the steel industry is extremely intensive and Nucor had to cope with competitive pressure from both domestic and foreign steel market. Because of recession time, the steel demand was decreasing dramatically while the company was suffered over capacity. In addition, Nucor had to confront with strong competitors which are US Steel (X) and ArcelorMittal (MT). Moreover, the company had to deal with price competition resulting from dumping of foreign competitors. The high material cost is also another challenge which Nucor had to cope with.…

With roots dating back to 1904 in the automobile manufacturing industry, Nucor’s business strategy has morphed many times over the course of the past century in response to struggling sales and unrealized business strategies. Since F. Kenneth Iverson’s appointment as Nucor’s President in 1965, however, Nucor has performed very well. With a focus on efficiency, Nucor is committed to minimizing bureaucracy and maximizing performance and productivity via the utilization of an open-door/continuous improvement/ entrepreneurial culture, a compensation scheme premised on performance-based incentives, and — last, but not least —commitment to technological advancement. With this approach, in an industry with 36 different companies, Nucor enjoyed the second largest market share in 1986, with 16 plants and an annual production capacity of 2.1 million tons of steel. In 1985, Nucor was ranked the most productive steel-maker in the United States and the second most productive in the world, averaging 981 tons per employee, per year. Nucor managed to achieve this success using a low-cost strategy, which proved to be particularly suitable in the highly competitive, commodity-like steel industry.…

(Nucor distinguishes itself from the rest of the steel industry with its use of scrap steel, a fact that makes Nucor the largest recycler in the nation.[25] Furthermore, the company uses modern steel making techniques allowing Nucor to employ fewer workers. The workers that Nucor does employ are all independent of unions; these workers have a vested interested in the productivity of the company because a significant portion of their compensation is based on their own productivity.[26] In addition, Nucor has recently focused heavily on acquisitions to increase production capacity and to make the company more competitive in the global market.[27]…

Nucor has been facing many industry challenges including the overall development of the industry. They are competing with foreign firms on cost and efficiency. Nucor has a low cost strategy because as they say their product is not necessarily very attractive. It does not have attractive or unique selling features other than its cost. The commodity of steel is in a very competitive market. Nucor understands that innovation and productivity are going to be key factors to keep their buyers satisfied with their prices. Nucor is facing many challenges with a growing world market and many of their competitors merging in order to create stronger more dominate conglomerates. The company is also facing several issue with other countries illegal dumping or subsidizing steel in the United States. This creates major strategic problems for Nucor because their prices are being matched or undercut and there is no protection to help them retain their market share or expand it. Nucor maintains its competitive advantage through its low cost production, and their use of electric arc furnaces and recycled scrap metals to produce steel. Prices for scrap steel was not higher than $137 until 2004, and reached a peak of $438 in 2008 before the economic recession hit. In 2009 and 2010 prices were $303 and $351 respectively, and then in 2011 hit an all-time high of $439. With their per unit cost structure relying heavily on these scrap steel prices, their ability to achieve greater profitability is reduced. Nucor needs to find a way to off-set these rising prices in order to maintain its low cost strategy.…

The prospects for future profitability of US Steelmakers are becoming less attractive. Customers are now choosing to buy imported steel due to the cheaper prices. The assets that Nucor built or acquired when the last economic recession took place generated a huge portion of their profits. It was noted how well they took advantage of economics recessions in order to grow more solid and powerful. Nucor should also consider expanding this type of industry environment and build more plants, but it should be done cautiously.…
