Howard Essay
“Success is achieved by development of our strengths, not by elimination of our weakness.” We all have our strengths and weaknesses, most of us have a problem acknowledging our weaknesses versus strengths. With our weaknesses, we tend to ignore them off for a length of time, or put them on the back burner. It is possible to make a difference in one’s weaknesses, it is not an easy task but eventually with motivation, one will succeed.
I love to help people; it never gets old for me. At an early age, my family joined Jack and Jill of America, which is an organization that performs community service within the community. Because of my involvement in Jack and Jill, helping people has always been a passion of mine. If I see someone that is in need, wherever I am, I never hesitate to assist that person. My father told me that when I was younger he used to give me money and I would try to give it to people who were less fortunate. Helping others is something that I enjoy doing and it will never grow old with me.
While I think that my humanitarian efforts are noble, people often tell me that I am “too” nice. I find it very hard to be rude and disrespectful; it’s just not in my nature. It brings me joy to see people helping others, and it brings me even more joy to help people who are less fortunate. I would agree with the statement that I am “too nice, for instance people tend to take advantage of me because they see the niceness in me. I believe Howard University will help diminish my weakness of being a passive person by being involved in many of the organizations that Howard University has to offer. I plan on using my humanitarian efforts toward different leadership roles. I believe when you respect people and serve a role as a leader; no person will take advantage of a respectful leader.
Motivation is the key that keeps me going every day; this is what separates me from any other applicant. In order for me to do exceedingly well on something, I have to have

This book review is on Strengths Finder 2.0. Written by Tom Rath, this book follows and elaborates on Donald Clifton's Strength Finder assessment created in 1998. Strength Finder 2.0 looks to dispel the outdated belief that only weaknesses need to be improved upon. The textbook Psychology Applied to Work describes this concept as positive psychology, "The aim of positive psychology is to shift the emphasis away from what is wrong with people to what is right with people" (Muchinsky & Culberson, pg. 384, 2016). With that premise on its head, Strengths Finder 2.0 looks to first identify the strengths of others and directs them to improve on what they already do so well. Even though the text can be applied practically, the book really focuses…

John Coyle the speaker of my Ted Talk talked about strengths and weaknesses. Coyle encouraged his audience to focus more on their strengths rather that their weaknesses. Coyle believed that if a person worked too long to improve their weaknesses, then it is obvious that they can’t improve those weaknesses, and should move on to focusing on their strengths. Therefore, the best thing to do is to move on to building up their strengths, because they can surely improve their strengths. According to the author of the book The Other Wes Moore, Wes never took the time to focus on his weaknesses in school. Wes focused on what he thought as an easy way to make money by selling drugs. He had a strength to manage,…

I am currently a senior Political Science major, History minor, with a concentration in International Relations. I am also the chairman of the Howard University NAACP Political Action Committee. I am an academic, I am a student leader, but more importantly, I am a servant. It is my firm belief that the reason I was blessed to be given the opportunity to get a college education is so that I can use this privilege and knowledge to help others. Just recently in December I was fortunate enough to go on a service trip to South Africa with the YAALI program. There we did community service and connected with our brothers and sisters on the continent. This was a very impressionable experience for me, especially because it was my first time leaving…

One of my huge weaknesses is low self-esteem and confidence (Bethel University, 2014). Having this as a poor skill in life makes a lot of the other skills hard to conquer. I think if I had a higher confidence level then maybe I wouldn’t struggle so much with public speaking, management of people and seeking support from others. I don’t give myself enough credit and I am hard on myself. Another weakness that I struggle with is the ability to focus on one thing at a time. I have struggled with this quality as far back as I can remember. My mind is always racing and trying to complete more than more thing at a time.…

Upon entering my freshman year of college I recognized I was not fully prepared for the rigorous academic scheme provided at my school, Howard University. One of the main observations was my peers received educational training in Advanced Placement General Chemistry, Advanced Placement Organic Chemistry and even had the opportunity to attend actual college courses during his/her high school careers. Those classes were not an option for me through my high school. Soon I found myself falling into a pit of failure. Long hours of studying and tutoring only produced D’s, F’s and an occasional C on my Chemistry reports. I was thoroughly ready to quit. I still remember sitting in my professor’s office in tears when he informed me that my academic…

Whether it was holding the door open for the person behind me or simply telling them to have a nice day, my favorite thing to do has always been to make people smile. In elementary school, more often than not, I assumed the role of class helper. This entailed staying after class parties to help clean up messes or spending extra time at recess to make sure all of the kickballs were in their specific spots. As I've grown up, it only makes sense that my love for helping people in any shape or form has translated into a love for volunteering. Whether it is tutoring elementary school children or helping run a clothing drive, the numerous altruistic tendencies that have been instilled in me through volunteer work will forever shape who I am as a…
