How a Ups Manager Cut Turnover
Question 1

Roeder wanted to reduce turnover because it was out of control when she first got their so it was costing the company more money by hiring new part time employees with high pay with benefits. After Roeder’s program she cut her districts attrition from 50% to 6% and lower hiring cost close to $1 million.

By applying all the different changes made to the company with just a short time such as giving them quicker and easier access to all the information, comfortable break room for staff, higher pay with benefits, financial aid to help with school. Also making the part time workers supervisors.

Katriona found that college students were most interested in building new skills that could apply later in their careers. She offered them Saturday classes for computer skills as well as career planning discussions. She also made the environment more comfortable for her employees as they were intimidated by the huge warehouse so she improved lighting and a new break room with a friendly atmosphere.     Setting performance standards is the first thing that Lei needs to do. She needs to set up a meeting with the employees and talk about the company rules and regulations and what is expected from each employee. Lei should also talk about setting company goals and employee performance. The policy and procedures should then be reviewed by everyone in the company. Also the employee handbook should be given to everyone so that they know what is expected of them. Lei should also talk about company performance and find ways eliminate employees from reporting time not worked and create a work schedule that will work for everyone. When it comes to measuring performance, Lei should come up with a plan to measure employee performance either by personal observation or written reports. I think that Lei would have to start observing the workers to make sure they are doing their jobs and then make up a written reports, hand to employees on a weekly basis so that they can see how their performance measures and what needs to be correct. Also awarding them for good work would increase leadership visibility. Lei will need to compare performance against the standards and determining deviations. She should compare the work accomplished against the expected work. She should also make it a point to compare the customer complaints to see if there are any deviations occurring now that did not happen before. Lei will also need to take corrective Action and by implementing the bureaucratic control system, she can now take the final step to ensure that operations are adjusted to achieve results, or if significant variances are discovered than Lei can take immediate action vigorous action.…

On the other hand, the education of those who are unsure should focus on “skills and knowledge of the kind best learned through formal education” (Bok, 2006, 79). During their schooling, they should be proactively trying to figure out what interests them. Undergraduates can accomplish this by taking career exploration classes, attending job fairs, talking to alumni in different fields, or even conversing with their professors. Also, for all students, but especially those with an undeclared major, learning about a wide range of topics is advantageous. By taking liberal arts courses, students can become more well-rounded and determine their interests. According to Nussbaum, employers often prefer those with a liberal arts background because they have “flexibility and the creativity to succeed in a dynamic business environment” (Nussbaum, 2010, 112). While some might want to start training for their future career right away, it is important for them to still take liberal arts classes.
