Can Wolves Really Change Rivers?
Wolves can really change rivers. Wolves bring the benefit to the ecosystem by killing and eating other animals. Unfortunately, people realize the fact only until the absence of these apex predators, also known as alpha predators. Apex predators are predators with no natural predators of their own and resides at the top of their food chain. Many people think that predators bring harm to the ecosystem by killing and eating other animals, but they don’t realize the benefit they bring and the harm of the absence of these apex predators. After being absent for over 70 years, the wolves were reintroduced in the Yellowstone National Park in the United States in 1995. (Wolf Restoration Continued) Researchers have studied the behavior of other animals and plants and the slight changes on the ecosystem overtime, and they have stumbled across one of the most exciting scientific findings of how wolves not only changed the ecosystem but also the rivers.
Wolves helped the balance of the ecosystem. Wolves kill various species of animals, but perhaps we're slightly less aware that they give life to many others. In 1872 when the Yellowstone National Park was created, there was no legal protection for wildlife in the park so hunters and tourists were essentially free to kill any game or predator they came across. From 1915 to 1925 up to 134 wolves were killed, and by 1926 there were no wolves left in Yellowstone National Park. (Yellowstone Park Wolves.) During the 70 years of absence due to illegal hunting and killing, several things happened. The numbers of deer had greatly increased in the Yellowstone Park because there was nothing to hunt them since their predator is now extirpated to nothing. (Wolves- Sustainable man)By this time many biologists were worried about eroding land and plants dying off. The elk were multiplying inside the park and deciduous, woody species such as aspen and

    To listen to the music of the wilderness, is to listen to the howl of the wolf. Man may never fully understand the composer, nor his passion behind each note, but the aura of mystery that surrounds him will forever fill our dreams with wonder and adventure. For centuries, wolves have carried their melodies on a small island in northern Lake Superior, known as Isle Royale. Completely cut off from the mainland, Isle Royale is extremely isolated, with only a handful of human structures and trails. The wolves who reside on the island are not alone, however, accompanied by a native of the cervidae family, the moose (Peterson). Together, these two species, combined with the remote nature of Isle Royale, produce one of the most incredible ecological relationships in the world. Their lives deeply intertwined, the moose and wolves share a unique predator-prey relationship. The moose consume the raw flora of the island, and the wolves feed on the moose without competition from other predators. The distribution of both species is limited to the islands shores, which creates a highly controlled setting. Such an incredible scenario has drawn the attention of biologists and ecologists from around the world. Beginning in 1958 and continuing to present day, the Isle Royale Research Project has intensively researched, documented, and monitored the interaction between the wolf and moose free of human presence (Peterson).     In addition to eliminating weak members of elk herds, hence strengthening the heard as a whole, wolves keep herds on the move and maintain the balance of the herd in reform to the fragile wilderness. In moving the herd frequently, wolves preserve groves of aspens and other smooth-barked trees, improving the stability of the ground and preventing damaging erosion, especially near river and stream banks essential for the survival of fish, beavers, and even aquatic-oriented birds. An imbalance in the wolf population has repercussions on the entire ecosystem, ranging from the more easily seen populations of elk to the more blurred effects on fish and expanding even further to animals who depend on fish, ultimately affecting even markets in our economy. This “trophic cascade,” named by biologists and ecologists, have a wide array of repercussions which can occasionally be irreversible.     The Canis Lupus or more commonly known as the gray wolf is the largest wild member in the Canine family. While once covering vast areas of the North American and European continent, the grey wolf was hunted to near extinction in the 1900’s due to mostly folk lore and fear. There were at least 136 confirmed kills between 1914 and 1926, and by the 1970’s biologist could find no evidence of a wolf population in Yellowstone Park. (National Park Service par. 1).
