The aim of this research was to see how postnatal depression demonstrated long term problems in child cognitive and emotional development; even though, the link between maternal and child pathology has not been identified clearly. In this research they conducted a prospective study that caused them to use self-rating questionnaires. They did this to gain clarity on the association between bonding disorders and maternal mood during pregnancy and after childbirth. The method of this research consisted of a total of 389 women. They were all asked to complete the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and the Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale four times each during their pregnancy and during their postpartum period. They found statistically significant weak to moderate correlations (r=0.14-0.39) between the EPDS and Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale scores each testing period. They also found out that women that experienced low mood tended to have strong bonding disorder. To make a long story short, the effectiveness of attachment between the mother and the child was much closed related to the mood of the mother as measured by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. In conclusion they observed many patterns of bonding and maternal mood, and the distinct subtypes regarding maternal mood and formation of mother-to-infant attachment suggested that the analysis of bonding disorder should be performed considering the course of maternal depressive
