How to Kick a Bad Habit

I believe everyone has at least one form of a bad habit. They come in all shapes and in all sizes. It varies from person to person and age to age. There are many types of habits but for this essay we will speak about how to kick a bad one. Whether you smoke, drink or maybe you have something small such biting your nails, it all boils down to a bad habit. A bad habit may control your entire life and could possibly destroy everything you have ever dreamed of doing and or having.
Your first step should be to keep a Journal. This will help you track your progress. It also will allow you to really see how your habit is affecting you and how often you are doing it. Sometimes we just may not realize how much our habits control us and take away our time.
Sit and think how this Habit is effecting you and your surrounding loved ones. Sometimes we make ourselves believe these constant habits are effecting only us. But on the contrary, If this habit effects our mood and behavior, this will in turn effect everyone around us. Are you possibly losing your friends and family? Is this worth your habit? More than likely it's not.
Why did you start this habit? Sometimes realizing this alone will help you overcome your habit. Maybe you need to cut out some negativity from your life. Or maybe something happened in your past that caused you to take up this bad habit. Either way, you need to sit and think of what caused this.
Are you willing to actually make these changes in your life? You must be dedicated to this and firmly believe in yourself and that you can make these changes.
Get professional help if you need it. Maybe you are now at the point of realizing this habit controls more of your life than you thought. As much as we would like to believe that we can handle it on our own, sometimes we need a little help from someone who is more educated on the matter.
Keep your friends and loved ones close. This one I think is very important. A third

In the book “The Power of Habit” Author Charles Duhigg explains, how a habit forms? An action or a move that takes place on our daily routine again and again is called habit. A habit is created of a cue, a cue is physical sense that makes our brain to follow an action; Routine is an action of doing something; and reward is the achievement of our actions. For instance, for a smoker the cue is pack of cigarettes, smoking is the routine, and the reward is the pleasure the he takes for smoking. Having said that, I have a few habits which are, eating my nails, and playing games. After reading “The Power of Habit”, I decided to incorporate Duhigg’s ideas about habit with my own habit of playing games, and will try to change it by knowing and understanding the habit loop, craving, golden rule of habit change,…

According to John Dewey, Habits are inevitable. We are empowered by both good and bad habits. In his essay, “Habits and Will”, Dewey states that we envision bad habits as such acts of “foolish idling, gambling, addiction to liquor and drugs”, and we associate good habits with skills such as walking, playing a musical instrument, and typing. We see bad habits as desires and good habits as abilities that “exist far from our impulsive desires”. Bad habits are not deliberately formed and are also hard to break. Dewey explains that will power alone is not enough; one must follow a specific method to turn habits around. I feel that I, someone who tends to get distracted easily and procrastinate, should benefit from Dewey’s habit-breaking method.…

The thing about bad habits is that we develop them because the activities are advantageous, pleasant, or rewarding in some way. My bad habit was rewarding in the fact that I was losing weight, and to reap continuous rewards, one must continue performing the same action that led to the reward the first time. This is how we as humans learn all of our behaviors; however, mine in particular led to something so awful. I was in the hospital for months being fed through tubes, something I would not wish upon my worst enemy. Anorexia nervosa is a serious, and in my case, a life-threatening eating disorder that is characterized by inadequate food intake leading to a weight that is clearly too low. My obsession with controlling my eating and body consumed me and sent me spiraling into depression, ruining friendships and ending…
