All pet owners want one thing ¬– for their loved pets to be healthy, happy, playful, and active. When animals become spiritless or inactive, pet owners should consider veterinary care. If symptoms progressively worsen, animals should be taken to a veterinary hospital. Many common diseases and illnesses found in animals are easily cured; however, cancer is best treated at an animal hospital staffed by board-certified oncology professionals.

While cancer in animals can be quite common, there is no clear indication what causes cancer. One type of cancer common in dogs is mast cell tumors. Mast cell tumors can occur at any age and most commonly occur in the superficial layers of the skin, but can also occur in the spleen, liver, and bone marrow. Certain breeds of dogs are more inclined to be affected by this disease – thought to be a genetic trait. Breeds that can become victims to mast cell tumors are Boxers, Bulldogs, Beagles, English Setters, and Golden and Labrador Retrievers. Boxers top this list and require regular check-ups by a primary care veterinarian.

An alert pet owner can notice such cancer at a very early stage; however, many times it can go unnoticed. Veterinary doctors may stage the tumor by performing a needle aspirate biopsy/cytology, complete blood count, serum chemistry profile, lymph node aspirate, and an abdominal ultrasound to check the liver and spleen. Further testing may include urine analysis, bone marrow aspirate, ultrasound, and X-rays. If mast cell tumors are detected, the best treatment is complete surgical removal. There are many specialty and emergency animal care hospitals that offer 24-hour emergency care and a full array of board-certified specialists for serious or critical

Pet health maintenance includes veterinary check-ups, vaccinations and other treatments. About seven in ten pet owners take their pet to the vet at least once a year. However, very much like in people, pets’ health deteriorates with age. About onequarter of all pets are considered by their owner to be overweight; if true, this might negatively affect the overall pet’s health, especially in dogs. One in ten pets is reported to suffer from a chronic health condition, with senior pets more prone to diseases. Further, about one in ten pets have had some behavioural problems in the past year, such as separation anxiety or house soiling. Canadian pet owners trust their veterinarians and are extremely loyal customers. Only 15 percent of pet owners switched their main veterinary clinic last year or intend to switch in the coming year, primarily, because of relocation. Overall, pet owners rate the vet services they received from their main vet clinic at 6.3 on a 7-point scale (where 1 is completely dissatisfied and 7 completely satisfied). Veterinarians’ attitude toward the pets, quality of treatment and vet’s competency received even higher marks than the overall rating. The majority of pets in Canadian cities are spayed or neutered. However, to date, only 13 percent of pets are microchipped though the number of electronically traceable pets is expected to increase next…

In the article “The Last Meow”, written by Burkhard Bilger and published in the New Yorker, Bilger describes the current life of owning a pet and just how many expenses go into these animals. Bilger believes the care for pets nowadays is too extreme and that people spend way too much money to perform outrageous surgeries along with other beneficial practices just to save their pets. I agree with him to an extent. Although I do believe some smaller practices are necessary to help pets, like treatments when they get injured or have a cold, most treatments now are superfluous and help the owner’s emotions more than the owner or the pets well-beings.…
