The Balkans is a territory in Europe comprised of many countries with many nationalities within them. In 1878 Serbia gained its independence after the Russo-Turkish war. In 1903, the pro-Austrian King Alexander of Serbia was murdered and was replaced by a new king determined to reduce Austrian-Hungarian influence. Austria-Hungary feared the influence of a strong country with a multi-ethnic empire. In order to combat this, Austria-Hungary started a tariff war and the Serbs went to France for support.…

Genocide is the systematic and planned extermination of an entire national, racial, political, or ethnic group. In Germany during World War II a man named Hitler tried to eliminate any race except for what he called the "Arian" race. In the process he committed genocide by killing off 6 million Jews and a total of 8 million people in all. Europe was going through some very hard times during the mid 1900's so that no one was able to see a disaster such as the Holocaust coming. Many things led to the weakening of Europe at the time. The Ottoman Empire was breaking up plus they were still trying to get over the devastation of WW I. Bosnia and Herzegovina had been having many problems as well. They were a witness to much change and devastation ever since the early 1900's when they became merged as Yugoslavia with three distinct ethnic groups. In the middle of WW II the axis powers split Yugoslavia into two separate pieces, pinning one side in conflict and war against the other. By the end of WW II a man named Josip Tito, a Croatian Communist created a pact between the two fighting sides. This lasted until 1960 when Tito granted Muslims a distinct ethnic status in society as an effort to put them on equal grounds with the Serbs and Croats. After Tito's death conditions got bad. The Serbs gained most of the power and began killing off the weaker non-Serb peoples. The situations between Germany and Bosnia are quite different, however, there is a strong resemblance as well. It is highly unlikely that another Holocaust would ever occur again as long as the memory of the catastrophe is not forgotten.…

The Bosnian genocide took place between 1992 and 1995, around the time my generation was beginning. It was a result of the war between Bosnia and the Serbians (and a number of Croatians). In 1946, Yugoslavia was divided into six federated republics: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. Bosnia passed a referendum for independence that was supported by the country's Muslims and Croats, but rejected by representatives of the Serb population, who established their own republic, Republika Srpska.…

The Bosnian Genocide is one of the most horrific events of our modern history. Under the former Yugoslavia, different ethnicities were all compressed under the regime of Josip Broz “Tito”, who managed to keep them united for 35 years, however after the death of Tito, violence escalated. Under General Ratko Mladić’s leadership, neighbors started killing neighbors, and changed the way Serbs, Bosnians and Croats treat each other up until now. Forgiveness for the killings is still hard to find, though more people are beginning to see the benefit in forgiving, and slowly the ethnic groups affected by the Bosnian Genocide are started to move toward each other.…

“Yet, only years after the Nazi-era, millions were sent to their deaths in places such as Cambodia, Bosnia, and Rwanda, and the world once again took too long to act.”(BrainyQuote.com , Allyson Schwartz, (n.d.), #1) The Bosnian Genocide had many causes that led up to it starting in 1992 when Bosnia and Herzegovina declared independence from Yugoslavia. The Bosnian Genocide occurred because of Serbian leader, Slobodan Milosevic, the province of Serbia did not want the nation of Yugoslavia to break apart, and there were also religious tensions between the nations.…

Genocide is an extremely controversial topic, it is not something that is black and white, and there are many gray areas and blurred lines. In Bosnia the genocide that took place there never involved any real genocidal acts (Document I). When the United States and NATO took action to stop the crimes being committed in Bosnia, they sent many bombs in hopes of stopping this genocide. Over 200,000 people were killed and over 2.3 million were left homeless, many of which could have been innocent civilians (Document J).…

For example, concentration camps and detention camps were used for mass killings of Bosniaks, which is similar to the method of the Nazis during the Holocaust (www.historyplace.com). Women were often raped in order to get pregnant and there were 20,000 rapes within rape camps between 1992 and 1995 (worldwithoutgenocide.org). There were over 200 concentration and detention camps, in which over 100,000 people died due to shootings, horrific living conditions, beatings, and rape. An example of a mass killing would be in the city of Srbrenica in July 1995. According to an interview with Mevludin Oric, “Everyone in the sea of bodies were dead” (www.nbcnews.com). Roughly eight thousand men and boys were dead after the massacre, and it is the worst mass extermination in Europe since World War…
