How to Balance School and Family
How to balance Penn Foster studies with family demands
Many people have struggled trying to balance their studies and their family demands. Now that I have learned how to balance between the two, things in my life are a little bit easier. I am a stay at home mother of six children, all under the age of 13. My children have many demands and I must find the time to meet their needs as well as meet the requirements to complete my schooling. The reason that I have decided to go with online classes is so that I will be able to be with my children and be able to help ease some of the financial burden that my husband has to deal with right now all on his own. The main goal that I am trying to achieve is balancing my family needs with my school studies.
One of the reasons that I decided to earn my associates degree in medical assisting through Penn Foster School is because it is affordable for me, classes are available online, and I am able to work at my own pace. I enjoy being able to complete my assignments when I have the time available. I have a busy daily schedule that I try to follow and that must include time for my homework. My youngest child is an 11-month old beautiful baby girl and she demands much of my time. The time that I am able to make for my studies is when she is napping or after I put her down for the night. While my schooling is very important to me, my family does come first, and I try to be the best mother that I can be. I want my children to be proud of me and know that I did this to benefit our family in the long run.
I have also learned to set small goals for myself. When I complete my goal I reward myself, by reading a book I enjoy. The way that I try to meet my goals is by logging onto the Penn Foster website to see how many assignment I have to complete. After I do that, I figure how much time I need to complete each course and I plan on how many assignments need to be completed each week and make that one of my goals.

I approach everything step by step....I had always set short-term goals. As I look back, each one of the steps or successes led to the next one. When I got cut from the varsity team as a sophomore in high school, I learned something. I knew I never wanted to feel that bad again....So I set a goal of becoming a starter on the varsity. That’s what I focused on all summer. When I worked on my game, that’s what I thought about. When it happened, I set another goal, a reasonable, manageable goal that I could realistically achieve if I worked hard enough....I guess I approached it with the end in mind. I knew exactly where I wanted to go, and I focused on getting there. As I reached those goals, they built on one another. I gained a little confidence every time I came through.…

My name is Julia and I am in my early twenties, and I would have never have imagined that I would one day be going back to school to earn my college degree. My mother and fiancé encouraged me to pursue it, because of my love of art and talking to people, marketing and public relations and that it would be very expensive since I wanted to go to college in America but could not afford it at the time. They were very supportive from the start; my fiancé assisting me in writing notes on flash cards and giving me pop quizzes and my mom reminding me to complete homework assignments when I was busy doing household chores. To me, my life was going great as I advanced further toward my future goals.…

I don't believe someone should ever have to choose between feeding themselves or learning something. I had to stay the progress of my education indefinitely in order to save myself financially. In the last two years, I've managed to pay off most of my debt and I'm finally ready to resume my academic career. Now, I work two jobs to support my fiancee with two children, so my scheduling gets cramped and hectic. I think it will be too difficult to try to coordinate attending any courses on a campus' schedule in the midst of going to two jobs and the organized chaos of raising two boys. I believe that the online courses at Colorado Christian University will allow me to continue my education on my time, so I can continue fulfilling the financial obligations of running a household. I would be able to take a course online on, for example say a Sunday afternoon or between shifts at work, and edge my way closer to obtaining a degree and leave this quagmire of a schedule working double-shifts behind me. I also find it wonderful that the teachings at this school are Christian-based, as I know of the wisdom taught in the Bible. I truly believe that the curriculum at Colorado Christian University is tailor-made by His hand to help me grow into exactly who He planned me to…

First, setting goals will help you focus on where you need to get to, instead of fooling around when you shouldn’t. I once read that having no goals to aim for is like shooting an arrow with no target, and it’s true. What are you aiming for in life if you have no dreams to reach? By setting goals, it will motivate you to keep going. Whether it’s for your education or in your career, you will want to keep pushing yourself so that you can become the best that you can. As Dr. O. Carl Simonton once said “Goals are simply tools to focus your energy in positive directions, these can be changed as your priorities change, new ones added, and others dropped.”…

I have always set my goals in my mind only, focusing on the main goal, never considering smaller goals. Since I have become a student at GCU, this class has taught me a lot about motivation and goal setting, and how these skills work together. I like the smart goal chart, it has shed a lot of light on the task of goal setting. The chart allows me to see all goals in front of me on paper, and with the proper outline it helps me focus on one step at a time in acheiving my goals. I like the idea of setting smaller goals, and then rewarding myself as I accomplish each step on my way to accomplishing the main goal. I have learned when I take on smaller goals, and reward myself along the way, it motivates me to press on toward the main goal. I will…
