How The Three Different Proteins Denature At The Same Temperature
In our experiment, we will be testing three different proteins to see if they denature at the same temperature. A protein is a molecule containing amino acids created in ribosomes that have many functions, including being an enzyme and transporter, structuring, translating genetic information, and serving as a channel for charged molecules to pass through the cell membrane. As a molecule, a protein is shaped like a coil (Food Science Basics 2014). Denaturation is when a protein's shape changes due to the effect of external stress which causes the protein to lose its ability to maintain the same cellular function as before.Types of external stress that may cause a protein to change its shape are the applications of heat, acid, alkali, or strong solvents such as alcohol. By applying these different types of external stress, the proteins denture, or their coils unwind. In our experiment, we will be applying the external stress of heat to the three different proteins. …show more content…
The protein shows a loss of solubility as well as a complete change in texture. The result of denaturing proteins can also cause it to die. After a protein is denatured, it is modified by additional atoms or molecules. After the protein undergoes this process, it begins to physically change shape. The external stress causes the protein to lose its coil shape and it begins to fold especially on the ends. Dentured proteins often tend to bond together to form clumps.The hydrophilic elements of the protein are then buried deep inside the structure, and the hydrophilic elements end up on the outside of the structure. The final shape of the protein is ultimately determined by its interaction with its surrounding
