How Steinbeck presents Lennie and George in Chapter 1
In George and Lennie’s relationship George takes the parent roll and treats Lennie as if he is a child. As they are talking about going for the interview for the job George exclaims “Now when we go in to see the boss, what you gonna do?”. This shows that he is checking up on Lennie and making sure he has understood instructions, which is like what parents do to their children. This shows that Lennie is very much like a child and has to be told many times about information, which leads on to how Lennie forgets everything that he has been told. This causing George to get frustrated pronouncing “So you forgot that awready, did you? I gotta tell you again do I? Jesus Christ”. The language used presents the way of how a parent speaks to their child using rhetorical questions, making them feel guilty. Also the sentences are short and snappy conveying an annoyed tone of voice, making Lennie feel small and shy. Lennie and George’s relationship however is very close and we can see that they depend on each other a lot even throughout the first chapter. Lennie is innocent and he doesn't know or understand many things that are happening in the world and therefore relies on George to keep him updated and out of trouble. With Lennie also forgetting things which I mentioned above George steps in and takes control and acting like a fatherly figure shown when George says “You never had none you crazy bastard. I got both of em here. Think I’d let you carry your own work card?”. George makes a joke out of this and thinks that it would be a completely stupid idea or suggestion that Lennie mentioned which any other person would have thought was normal, showing how well they really know each other. On the other George, relies a lot on Lennie because of his innocence. Lennie portrays the maturity that most children have and thinks that nothing in life can go wrong.
