How pride affects the world
I do agree that pride is a wonderful terrible thing. In the story, The Scarlet Ibis, pride is what helped Doodle to do things he never could have done, but in a way it also led to his death. Doodle’s brother wanted a normal brother who could do things with him through his pride he had accomplished that. Ultimately though it was through his pride that he ended up having no brother at all. Pride was great for Doodle’s life because he got to experience things he never would have, but pride was a factor in Doodle’s death.
I believe that in the world that we live in pride helps people, but also hurts people like in the story. A quote from T.S. Eliot, American-English poet and playwright, says that, “Most of the trouble in the world is caused by people wanting to be important and proud.” I believe that is true because many wars are fought over land and a country wants to be a proud owner of new land. One reason The Revolutionary War was fought because the Americans were proud of what they were and the British were too proud to let America go. The Civil war and revolutionary act happened because blacks were proud of whom they were, but the Americans were too proud to let them free with equal rights. Pride has always affected the world we live in.
Pride can also help the world in a good way. The Ancient Greeks philosopher Aristotle had once said, “Pride seems to be a sort of crown of the virtues; for it makes them more powerful, and it is not found without them. Therefore it is hard to be truly proud; for it is impossible without nobility and goodness of character.” I believe that this is also true because if people do good things they later feel proud of themselves. If people keep doing good things to feel proud then pride can help reform the world. Pride can have people do good things so they can be recognized. Although people will be doing good things for themselves good things will still happen.
