How Jeanne Shaheen Became A Senator
Jeanne Shaheen is one of two U.S. Senators from the state of New Hampshire. Starting as a campaign manager, Shaheen worked her way up to become the first female governor and the first female senator for NH. Ideologically, she classifies herself as a moderate Democrat and hopes to be an advocate for the middle class and for small businesses. Coming from a relatively historic Republican territory, Senator Shaheen must carefully shape her political agenda to fit the needs of her constituency, recognize the major voting bloc of independents in New Hampshire and develop a strategy of bilateral talk that will allow her to successfully work with the opposing Republican Party in order to maintain voter support.
Personal and Professional Background & Formative Experiences Jeanne Shaheen was born in St. Charles Missouri on January 28, 1947. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from Shippensburg College in 1969 and attained her masters in political science from the University of Mississippi in 1973.1 Afterwards, she moved to New Hampshire where she taught a school and ran a small business with her husband. Soon thereafter in 1980, Shaheen began her political career as a campaign manager were she worked for the former President Jimmy Carter in the New Hampshire primary.2 She also campaigned for Gary Hart in the New Hampshire primary of 1984 and for Paul McEachon for governor of New Hampshire in 1986 and 1988.3 With the knowledge of how to run a successful campaign, Shaheen decided to pursue her own political goals by running for the state legislature, where she served three terms. In 1996, Shaheen, with six years of experience from the New Hampshire Senate, decided to run for governor. Despite a democratic senator not having been elected since 1980, Shaheen overcame all obstacles and became the first female governor of New Hampshire.
Shaheen served as governor of New Hampshire from 1997-2003. During her time as governor, she advocated the expansion of

Giffords convinces the audience that because she has represented southern Arizona she has the basic knowledge about passing hopeful bills and what goes on “behind closed doors”. She informs her audience, “They will try to hide their decision behind grand talk, behind willfully false accounts of what the bill might have done — trust me, I know how politicians talk when they want to distract you”. Because Giffords understands how politics operate, she knows the skills and methods that Senators use. She clearly knows how they will try to manipulate others and divert the truth of their decisions. Giffords also introduces her pedigree through stating, “I was elected six times to represent southern Arizona, in the state Legislature and then in Congress. I know what a complicated is; I know what it feels like to take a tough vote”. Because Giffords is engaged in politics and an appointed government official, the audience tightly clings to her argument and finds the proper respect. She gains the trust to be able to talk about. In modern America, women are commonly expected and encouraged to explore career paths that were virtually unthinkable for women in relatively recent history. Much progress has been made in the past 40-50 years toward gender equality, and at the time of this writing, it appears that the first female presidential candidate will run in the 2016 primary election. However, these are relatively recent changes in American culture and sadly, vestiges of old social norms still have a toehold in some parts of the country and the unilluminated parts of many people's psyches. In this story, Dubus reminds us of what it might have been like for a young female in what is likely the 1950's to 1960's era (not that long ago), where the high standards of female…

Lately we have been discussing a lot about how Wyoming and its elected officials have become great examples and influences for our state and I think there have been a few legislators in the past decade or so who have made a major impact on how Wyoming views ourselves and how we are viewed nationally. With the lowest population of all the 50 states, we are stereotyped into a category where our votes are considered sometimes a “nuisance” and “dead-weight”. It wasn’t till politicians such as Senator Mike Enzi and Senator Al Simpson was Wyoming finally put on the political map. Senator Mike Enzi is the chairman of the Health Administration board and has received numerous awards and honors in his quest to grant Wyoming and America a better health care system. Senator Al Simpson (1979-1997) was chairman of the Veteran’s Affairs Committee and is a well known and very well respected on Capitol Hill. He was a considered candidate for George H.W. Bush in 1988 and has raised over $200 million dollars for the University of Wyoming. He is well respected for his advocacy for civil rights, abortion and gay rights.…

Oregonians know Ron as a senator who listens. Always citing the need to “throw open the doors of government for Oregonians,” he holds an open-to-all town hall meeting in each of Oregon’s 36 counties each year. Thus far he has held more than 600 meetings. Wyden’s dedication to hearing all sides of an issue and looking for common sense, non-partisan solutions has won him trust on both sides of the aisle and put him at the heart of nearly every debate. In 2011, the Almanac of American Politics described Wyden as having “displayed a genius for coming up with sensible-sounding ideas no one else had thought of and making the counter-intuitive political alliances that prove helpful in…
