How Is Courage Shown In Saving Private Ryan
In the film “Saving Private Ryan” there are a lot of times where there military virtues. There are serval different military virtues like courage, duty, honor, respect, and integrity. I’ll also be talking about the novel “All Quiet on the Western Front” by Erich Maria Remarque. I chose this theme because I feel like this is something that is overlooked with a soldier. Courage is something that is brought up a lot in the film “Saving Private Ryan”. Courage to me is an action that you do not for you but for the good of others. In the movie I saw many acts of courage, but the one that stood out to me is when Private Ryan told Captain Miller that he was staying because he wasn’t leaving his “brothers” and his post. I think this was courageous because he did not want to leave the men he has served with and was not going to leave his follow soldiers to be slaughtered by the Germans. Captain Miller showed his integrity because he and the soldiers both treated the German like a dog. The Captain saw this, and put away his emotions. He viewed the German not as the enemy but as a person. This action showed that his integrity was not taken away completely by the war. It shows the viewer that the Captain has mercy for this man. I feel integrity is important because without it there would not be compassion or mercy. Integrity is a quality that everyone has but they might not know how to demonstrate. I thought that Captain Miller was going to kill the German, but he did not. He changed his mind, his integrity took over and let the man live. He showed compassion to the man who killed his friend.     This plays a large part in the development of Paul’s relationships with his other comrades’. Paul admires Kat for these qualities, because Kat can find food, he can also calm the men after a crazy and scary fight. Paul inherits a lot of these qualities as his experiences continue; they look out for each other on the front no matter what. Latter in the book, Paul and Kat come up to this Fair Haired Recruit who is now missing his whole leg. During this, Paul wants to shoot him because he knows that this recruit/comrade is going to die if he is sent to the hospital.     In All Quiet on the Western Front, Paul comes into the war as a young and optimistic boy. The war is a fresh start for Paul and he holds many traits that eventually diminish through out the book. Entering the war after being convinced by a schoolmaster, Paul is positive and content. His elation is shown when he says, "Here it is beautiful. These are wonderfully carefree hours. Over us is the blue sky. On the horizon float the bright yellow, sunlit observation-balloons, and the many little white clouds of the anti-aircraft shells." Along with his positivism and happiness, Paul is also trusting. He demonstrates his trust for the elder soldiers in charge by saying, "We often made fun of them and played jokes on them, but in our hearts we trusted them. The idea of authority, which they represented, was associated in our minds with a greater insight and a more humane wisdom." In the early times of the war Paul is also immature. He demonstrates an act of immaturity by dumping a latrine-bucket on Himmelstoss along with other practical jokes.     When one of Paul’s best friends Kemmerich dies, Paul is the one who has to tell his mom about the bad news. One quote that points to this is, “I must go and see Kemmerich’s mother… This quaking, sobbing woman who shakes me and cries out on me: ‘Why are you living then, when he is dead?’” (181). Paul had enough bravery to talk to his dead friend’s mother about how her son died. Paul has to lie to Kemmerich’s mother or else she would have been even more devastated than she had been when she heard the bad news. Paul was devastated when his friend died but stayed brave because he knew with war came death. An example that also proves this is, “Kat falls. We two are alone… Couldn’t I shoot myself quickly in the foot so as to be able to go with him… ‘he is stone dead’ … Do I walk? Have I feet still? … Then I know nothing more” (287-291).     After Paul is sent back to the front, he has to crawl through No-Man's-Land, an attack begins, he becomes lost, crawls into a hole to play dead, and stabs a French soldier who falls into the hole. This shows how Paul and others during the war are changing from the civilized people they were into savage animals.
