How Humans Affect The Environment
How humans can affect the environment

Split into groups of 5. Pick 2 of the titles and research them. (use kerboodle books for information pages 264 – 283) Create questions (the number of marks is up to you) and create a mark scheme. You are going to teach each member of your group, your part of this topic and then test the rest of your groups understanding with the questions you create.
Print anything you need to teach the rest of your group. You may get questions from bitesize, AQA past papers or kerboodle to help you.

1. The effects of the population explosion
How and why has the human population risen without any consequences?
What would happen to other species if their populations grew?
What is the effect on resources?
How does this affect the environment?
How is waste managed? What are the potential problems with poor waste management?

2. Land and water pollution
How do humans pollute land?
What are the problems caused with land pollution?
How do humans (farmers) pollute the water?
What are the problems of polluting water?

3. Air pollution
How is acid rain formed?
What are the effects of acid rain?
How have humans tried to control acid rain?
What have we done in the UK to try and reduce acid rain?

4. Deforestation and peat destruction
What are the effects of deforestation? (Include the effects on species and land)
What are peat bogs? Why are they important for the environment?
How are they useful for humans?
How is the UK trying to discourage less usage of peat bogs?

5. Global warming
How has carbon dioxide levels changed over the years?
How is carbon dioxide used and released in the environment? (remember to teach what sequestered means)
Explain the greenhouse effect
What are the effects of global warming on the Earth? 6. Biofuels
What are biofuels?
How are ethanol based fuels made?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of ethanol based fuels (possibly a 6 marker!)
What are the latest biofuel technologies? What are the worries

    The lab was conducted at the McBride residence. For this experiment vegetable oil, vinegar and liquid detergent was use to contaminate the water. Testing of how ground water is affected by different contaminants was the bases of the experiment. The results were interesting in that when vinegar is filtered through dirt it came out fairly clean, it also changed the scent. This shows that maybe we can find a way to find a safer choice on how we filter and purify water. The use of sand, charcoal and gravel was used as an aquifer to exact the water. Bleach was used to sterilize the contaminated water and the process. For the last lab, tap, Dasani and Fiji water were tested with ammonia, chloride, iron and phosphate to determine which water is better for humans to drink.     The carbon cycle is based on carbon dioxide which is a very important element because it is a part of all life. All living things are made of elements such as oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus. There are such compounds that are necessary for life such as sugars, fats, proteins etc. that joins with carbon to form these essential elements. Carbon is not just in all living things; carbon is also present in the earth’s atmosphere, soils, crust, and oceans. When we look at earth as a system, these components act as storage for large amounts of carbon and when there is movement between these storages, they connect to create cycles. An example of such cycle is photosynthesis in which the carbon in the atmosphere is used to create new plant material. Over time, these plants die or decay, are harvested by humans, or burned for energy or in wildfires. All these processes, which are movements that can cycle carbon back into the atmosphere, are amongst various components within the ecosystems, and after a while releases the carbon back into the atmosphere. Humans breathe oxygen in which plants breathe carbon dioxide and releases oxygen and when human’s burn trees and other solid carbon deposits into the atmosphere, the plants that breathe the CO2 can’t keep up and the CO2 is building up. While the CO2 builds up fast since the past hundreds of years, it traps solar heat and increases the global temperature rapidly. This is not good for humans and if this chain reaction continues, who knows if humans will be able to deal with the ultimate temperature change.…
