How Does Writing Affect Poe's Life
There are numerous things on Earth that are appealing to the human eye that satisfies sadness or brings happiness, however there is nothing more powerful like writing that allows one to escape and express themselves with passion. Writing enables for the sharing of one’s life, knowledge, ideas, and other facets of the human experience in such way utterly unparalleled by anything else. Edgar Allen Poe, the author of, “The Cask of Amontillado,” grew up living a strenuous life with his foster father. Poe’s life has had an impact on his literature due to the cataclysmic events throughout his life. However, his writing has helped him be defined as a very disturbing yet brilliant writer. “The Cask of Amontillado,” is suspected to have been written under the influence on numerous events in Poe’s lifetime. Edgar Allen Poe begins the story with suspense as he writes about the secret vengeance plan Montresor had planned for his friend, Fortunato. Additionally, the narration of the catacomb adds suspense due to the imagery the author incorporated. Moreover, Edgar Allen Poe slowly unravels the horrific mood as he writes about the dark and monstrous person that Montresor is due to his evil thoughts, actions, and words. The author then settles for the mood of horror as he shows Montresor’s schadenfreude. Edgar Allen shows this as he shows how merciless Montresor is as Fortunato is in agony as he is dying slowly.     In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Poe engages the reader by using point of view to emphasize the untrustworthiness of Montresor's, the narrator’s, character. For example, when Montresor had described how Fortunato had inflicted him with “[a] thousand injuries” and “ventured upon insult”, “[Montresor] vowed revenge” (1). This is the moment when the reader first experiences his unreliability as a narrator. Montresor had never specified the copious wounds that he had supposedly suffered from Fortunato and the severity of his offense. Furthermore, when Montresor had voiced out that Fortunato had ventured, in order words proceed with knowledge of risks, he had let bias trickle into his words. Us, the readers do not know whether or not Fortunato had intentionally insulted Montresor with malicious intentions, but in Montresor’s phrasing of words, it implies that he did indeed intended to do so. This not only makes the reader question the extent of exaggeration that Montresor inserts into his statements, but the reliability of the narrator as the story progresses. In addition, after Montresor had successfully, albeit reluctantly, finishes burying Fortunato in the alcove, he remarks: “My heart grew sick—on account of the dampness of the catacombs” (9). Here, one can see that Montresor had almost a moment in which he had felt guilt, yet had been quick to disregard it to the scenery.
