Introduction- diffusion is a passive transport where molecules move from areas of higher concentration to areas of low concentrations. Although the molecule 's movement is random, equilibrium is being sought out. Osmosis is a type of diffusion only It involves water. In osmosis water diffuses from the area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, to diffuse the more molecule rich side. Because cells have selectively permeable membranes, meaning certain substances can flow through the membrane, this allows osmosis to happen to cells in certain solutions. 4.) Poor 50 mL of water into each cup.
5.) Put one piece of potato in each cup (remember to record the mass of the potato that was in each cup).
6.) Let solutions sit for two days.
7.) Take potatoes out of solutions.
8.) Weigh each on a scale separately.
9.) Record results.

Mass of potato before: 5.57g. 5.35g. 4.88g
Mass of potato after: 6.82g. 4.40g. 2.94g.
Mass changed by: +1.25g. -1.13g. -1.94g

Results- The solution had a Higher concentration the potato lost more mass then when the solution had medium concentration or no sugar concentration. The solution with the most sugar concentration lost 1.94 g of mass while the solution with medium concentration lost 1.13 g and the solution will with no sugar added tends gained 1.25 g of

    In this experiment we were trying to determine the osmolarity of potato tubers by weighing them before and after incubating them in solutions of sucrose with varying molarities. To find the osmolarity we took a potato and used a cork borer to obtain seven samples of potato tubers. We then prepared seven beakers with concentrations of sucrose ranging from 0.0M to 0.6M. After weighing the potato tubers one by one we cut them in half and placed each halved tuber into each beaker. We incubated them for 1 hour, stirring every 10 minutes. After one hour we removed the pieces and weighed them and compared the initial and final weights to find the percent change in weight for each solution. The results showed that the 0.0M-0.3M solutions increased the weight of the potato tubers. The 0.4M solution of sucrose only increased the weight by 0.47%. The sucrose solutions of 0.5M and 0.6M increased the weight of the potato tubers. The sucrose solutions of 0.0M to 0.3M increased the weight of the potato tubers, supporting our hypothesis. The sucrose solution of 0.4M only slightly increased the weight of the potato tubers, supporting our hypothesis that the osmolarity of the potato tubers was 0.4M. The sucrose solutions of 0.5M and 0.6M increased the weight of the potato tubers, which did not support our prediction that the weight should decrease, but that was most likely due to errors in removing excess solution from the potato tubers after removing them from the solution.…

    My group and I conducted the experiment that estimates osmolarity by change in weight of potato tubers, this was conducted in order to explore the process of diffusion and osmosis and more importantly to investigate the question of “Does different concentrations of sucrose solutions have an effect on the final weight for the potato tubers?” In this experiment we estimated the osmolarity of potato tuber cores by submersing different potato cores into sucrose solutions of 0.0-0.6M, and weighing the potato. The results showed the weight of the potato tubers had the highest percent change in weight meaning that they weighed more than the initial weight in sucrose solutions from 0.0-0.3M; it also showed that sucrose concentrations from 0.4-0.6M the weight of the potato tubers decreased.     The research question that I asked myself before the experiment was “What is the osmotic potential of potato?” The answer I got after the experiment was that the osmotic potential of potato is very high because this experiment exactly showed what happened when there is Osmosis present and the following information will prove it. Our results greatly showed that there has been osmosis present. From 0.0 mols of sucrose to 0.3 mols of sucrose there has been gain in mass for the potatoes. However from 0.4 mols of sucrose to 1.0 mols of sucrose there has been gain in mass for the potatoes. Also 0.3 mols of sucrose is the point where there has been almost no change or very little change in mass of potato. There has been no loss and gain in mass or very little change and gain mass. This means that at this point there concentration of the sucrose and potato are equal. As you can see from the graph that the gain of mass is very little compared to the loss of the mass and this proves that our prediction was right.
