How Does Montag Change In Fahrenheit 451
In the novel Fahrenheit 451, Clarisse McClellan’s curiosity was crucial in the character development of Guy Montag. Throughout the novel, because of Clarisse, Montag faced a personality shift.Montag shifted from a very strict person that goes by the rules to a very defiant person. Clarisse was necessary for Montag’s self-examination. She showed him how he’s missing out on love, pleasure and being content in life.Although he did become rebellious to the government he potentially became more aware of the world and started living how it was meant to,not how they’re controlled to.Clarisse was an essential piece to Montag’s questioning of society, sparking the curiosity to seek knowledge which led him to question the oppressive government.

Montag’s relationships with friends experienced a change as he started having different viewpoints about them. At the beginning of the book, Montag was a strict rule follower with no thought of ever breaking these laws. Montag’s friends must have been the same way, leading Montag to feel distant from his friends and feeling as if he doesn't belong. Montag even begins seeing the simplicity in his wife Mildred, seeing she's just as society wants her to be and their relationship is superficial. Page 88 of the PDF Montag says “I don't talk things, sir. I talk about the meaning of things.This quote states how he wants more than shallow conversations, how Montag wants to discuss in meaningful conversations about deeper aspects of life.Unlike the conversations he has with Mildred. This goes back to a conversation Montag had with Clarisse on page 43 of the PDF “People don’t talk about anything” “Oh, they must!” “No, not anything. They name a lot of cars, clothes, or swimming pools mostly and say how swell! But they all say the same thing and nobody says anything different from anyone else.” This quote shows how everyone is very similar, and every conversation is superficial and never about anything deep. At this point in the book Montag can't conform to the shallow ways of society. I believe Clarisse being young and beautiful must’ve had a sort of effect on Montag.
