How Does Melvin Burgess Use Language
Melvin Burgess uses language very powerfully in a variety of different ways. He uses very persuasive ways of changing the readers opinion but leaves it open a bit to you can still think what you want and kind of have your own opinion about the book but adds a bit of his own opinion. My first reason why Burgess uses language powerfully is that he said “Its’s getting colder and you know you’ve got nothing to lose.” This shows that one of the characters is in deep trouble when something is really wrong and that it just can’t get any worse. The bit where it says “It’s getting colder” this shows that things are getting bad or they are already bad. In addition to this the second bit of the text “you know you’ve got nothing to lose.” This shows that things can’t get any worse or that you literally have nothing to lose. This can make the reader feel bad for that person in the book or build an emotion with them to show how the feel. This could also change what and how the reader thinks about the character The second reason is about how Melvin uses different characters throughout the whole story. This can make the reader very interested in the whole story because if he uses only one character as “I” then the reader will get bored of the story and they might not …show more content…
In other words he is saying that they do not have very strong emotions so for example they would give up on something that was a little too hard for them but normal people even if it was a little hard for them they would try again until they had done it. Finally this can make you feel bad for them and have a sad opinion about them because they might cry a lot and com on who would not feel sorry for a crying

Figurative language shows how his brain works and what he thinks of everything around him and whether he appreciates it or wants it to be different. “My mother sighed. As she exhaled she seemed to shrink into the chair. Even her perfume seemed to fade. She looked at her hands, turning them over in front of her face like they were misplaced artifacts she had pulled from the earth. Then she looked at me. She leaned forward and whispered, ‘without Dr. Finch, your father will kill us. Dr. Finch is the only person in the world who can save us.’” (52, 53) The figurative language in this quote shows how drastically his mother looked like she was fading…shrinking…dying. She looked at her hands like they weren’t hers, like they were something she didn’t understand. She was going through a lot of mental trouble, which was all summed up with the figurative language. Another rhetorical device that shows up in the novel Running with Scissors is the one which shows up most often: sarcasm. Augusten is constantly sarcastic, along with everyone around him, showing they all have generally bad attitudes towards everything that happens to them. For Augusten, this is because he doesn’t know if he’s happy with his life. “I took inventory of my life: I was seventeen, I had no formal education, no job training, no money,…

A good discussion tends to start with our “heads” and end with our “hearts.” Therefore, you may want to save subjective opinions of taste until after you have discussed the more objective elements of this work. Objective: For this essay, you will be analyzing Erik Larson’s style, revealing what devices he uses to convey his message(s) to his readers. The majority of the paper should be comprised of detailed close readings that analyze how his use of language contributes to an overall effect on the reader. Feel free to draw evidence from your journal (but don’t do so blindly, without considering if there are better options! You may end up taking only general ideas from the journal.). Your analysis should show real depth and insight, going beyond the obvious, and beyond what we have discussed in class. Your paper should also show an awareness of the entire novel. Focusing only on one section may hopelessly distort your analysis.…
