A simple farmer with Puritans’ beliefs, John Proctor, shows his honesty in the court with the confession that he had committed adultery. In the hope of life, Proctor signs his false confession and later says, “I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” (Miller—Act IV) This shows that how Proctor is honest to Rebecca Nurse and Martha Corey, Proctor also keeps his integrity and stick to the truth by not confessing witchcraft. Similarly, 40 year-old widow, Angela, tries not to give a false name as a witch and bears the torture.
