How Does America Switch Over To The Metric System
How great is it that America is unique compared to the rest of the world? Well, in the case of using the imperial system instead of the metric, it is not very great. The metric system, also called the International System of Units or SI, is a system of measurements and units that started to develop in 1670 in France by Gabriel Louten, a vicar. After facing much criticism for challenging the previous system of measurements for each country, it was gradually implemented internationally. However, the metric system never quite overthrew the US customary system, which derived from the British imperial system. America should switch over to the metric system because it has uniform base units, it is easier to calculate because it based on increments of ten and decimals, and it is used by the rest of the world. The metric system uses the same units for each type of measurement for uniformity. For instance, length is always measured in meters, mass is always grams, and volume is always cubic meter or liter. In the US customary system, length can be measured by inches, feet, yards, miles, …show more content…
To obtain greater units of measurement from the base units, just add the appropriate prefix or move the decimal. For example, converting 1.32 meters to centimeters means moving the decimal to the right twice, producing 132 centimeters. Likewise, dividing one meter into one hundred units means memorizing that “centi” is the prefix for “hundred” and acquiring one hundred “centimeters.” Just converting from an inch to a mile means multiplying an inch times twelve to get a foot, multiplying that by three to get a yard, and multiplying that by 1,780 to get a mile. Also, the US customary system was based on a medieval English system that does not change with the advancements in science and math that needs units for measurement. Meanwhile, the SI continues to add and create the new measurements for new

Shirlee is working with a measurement tool that reports measurements in centimeters. Since Shirlee is unfamiliar with centimeters, she would like her centimeter measurements to be converted into yards, feet, and inches. She would also like the result to be properly rounded to the nearest inch. As an example, if the measurement is 312 centimeters, this should be converted to 3 yards, 1 foot, and 3 inches.…

As I said before the metric system is a LOT simpler! There are 10 millimeters in a centimeter, 100 centimeters in a meter, and 1000 meters in a kilometer. In the English style: the kings foot is 12 inches, from the kings nose to the tips of his fingers is a yard, and there are 1760 yards in a mile. The metric system also avoids many confusions of the dual-use of terms that have place in the English system.…

One crucial, yet widely unnoticed issue plagues the United States of America today: the country simply faces a stubborn unwillingness to convert to the metric system. America spends millions of dollars on keeping the U.S. customary system in place. The refusal to convert hinders the country’s progress in the global economy. A conversion failure even sent a poor satellite hurtling towards destruction on the surface of Mars (Wheeler). The United States needs to convert to the metric system as soon as possible.…
