How Do the Writers Present Aspects of Childhood in the Three Poems You Have Studied?
Within all of the three poems we have studied, UA Fanthorpe’s half past two, DH lawrence’s Piano and Stephen Spenders, there are aspects of childhood being described and conveyed. However each poem conveys them in a different manner, but there are some similarities as well.

Firstly I will talk about what each poem is about and what attitude and themes they possess compared to the other two.

In the poem half past two by UA fanthorpe a boy is given detention for an unspecified misdemeanour, and is later on forgotten by his teacher. The boy however has no concept of proper time, and therefore drifts off into a sort of daydream. This is hinted in stanza 7, which says
“Into the smell of old chrysanthemums on her desk,
Into the silent noise his hangnail made
Into the air outside the window into ever”

The attitude expressed by this poem is a light one and the theme of childlike ignorance, innocence and punishment is quite prominent. This is effectively shown as UA Fanthorpe relies on her experience as a teacher to describe the whole poem through the eyes of the boy, and not from an adult. Which helps give you hands on experience of what is happening in the poem.

The theme of childlike ignorance and innocence is further carried on due to quotes such as
“He was too scared of being wicked to remind her.” Which portray how scared children normal are when they get into some sort of trouble.
And
“he knew gettinguptime, timeyouwereofftime, timtogohomenowtime and TVtime” This shows his childlike characteristics, as there are many comma’s putting forth a list like effect, and also he uses enjambment as an effective tool.

In Piano by DH Lawrence the theme is a little different to that of half past two. In piano a grown man (the speaker) is proud to be an adult; however he remembers his childhood and becomes very nostalgic. He then proceeds to struggle between his desire to become a child again or to remain a man. This is apparent in line 11 when the speaker

    The notion of childhood continues to undergo tremendous changes over time, place and culture. Some of the most influential factors responsible for this change among other things include economic, socio-cultural and political dynamics (Holland, 1996; James & Prout, 1997; Sorin & Galloway, 2005). The purpose of the following analysis is to examine nine images of children being depicted in today’s media and identify the different constructions of childhood that they promote. The three social constructions of childhood that have been identified in these images include: the child as vulnerable (Simpson, 2005), the child as innocent (Woodrow, 1999) and the child as a ‘gendered being’ (Burman, 1995). Conceptual tools will be used to deconstruct the selected images such as positioning, colour, lighting and facial expressions and will clarify how these tools are used in constructing the notion of childhood. It is safe to say that the images deconstructed and analysed throughout this paper suggest that there is strong relationship between the social constructions of childhood and how this conception of childhood has often denied them of their agency and profoundly shaped and limited their ability to participate as active citizens in today’s society (Morrow, 2003).…

    Poet Thomas Gray famously wrote with nostalgia of the felicity of childhood, that “Where ignorance is bliss, ‘tis folly to be wise” (Gray). His poem reminisces of childhood innocence with fondness, to be carefree, unmarred of the realities of responsibility, and pure of cynicism. ‘Childhood innocence’ simply stated is a naïve ignorance that is inevitably lost with maturity. Exposure to the harshness of the world shapes the identity of adults while they are children, and loss of innocence is a common theme that is represented in many forms of literature in order to express these experiences of harshness. Many authors tend to illustrate their characters with certain backgrounds in order to relate to the reader, and oftentimes ordinary realities are not the best fit. Unfortunately, some children go through significant hardships early in life and not all children have a carefree childhood because their lives are too complicated, resulting in a loss of innocence. Upon reading Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables, Fitzhugh’s Harriet the Spy, and Boyne’s The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, one gains a strong understanding of childhood identity depicted through innocence and experience. More specifically, by examining the similarities and differences in the characters Anne, Harriet and Bruno, it is evident that the authors’ portrayal of innocence is complex, however it is made fluid when their relationships with their parents and friends, as well as their common ignorance is explored.…
