How do the unique chemical and physical properties of water make life on earth possible?

Heat Capacity – the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of something one degree celcius Cohesive strength - The internal strength of the adhesive. The measure of a label's resistance to removal. Surface Tension - the attraction of molecules to each other on a liquid's surface, creating a barrier between the air and the liquid. Heat of Vaporization – the amount of energy required to change a liquid to a gas Solvent - liquid that can dissolve a substance

A physical property of water that is necessary to life on earth is the fact that ice floats. Ice is held by its hydrogen bonds in a crystal like structure in which each water molecule is bound together by 4 hydrogen bonds to other water molecules. These bonds are packed less tightly than they are in liquid water, so solid water is less dense than liquid water and therefore floats. This isn't the case in most other liquids. It's a good thing that ice floats because if it didn't then water would freeze from the bottom up. That would make it impossible for life to exist. Instead, ice forms a protective layer which keeps the water at least over zero Celsius allowing organisms to survive.

A property of water that is necessary to life on earth that is chemical is water's high heat capacity. Water's high heat capacity make it a good temperature moderator. Water's heat capacity makes oceans, ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water relatively constant throughout the seasons. It also has the effect of minimizing variations of atmospheric temperature.

Cohesive strength and surface tension are physical properties of water that make life on earth possible. Liquid water has a dynamic structure which means that hydrogen bonds are continually forming and breaking. In liquid water, each molecule forms around 3.4 hydrogen bonds which accounts for water's cohesive

    Water has many unique properties that make life possible on Earth. One property is cohesion. The cohesion property is properly defined as the binding of water molecules by hydrogen bonds. Water has this property as a result of the chemical bonding between water. Cohesion of the strong hydrogen bonds allows the water molecules to stick together, almost as a unit of one. A force exerted on one of the molecules will be exerted on all of the adjacent molecules as a result of cohesion. Cohesion, often with the cooperation of adhesion, the clinging of one substance to another, adds to the function and ability of water to overcome strong natural forces, such as gravity. When water is in its liquid state of matter, the hydrogen bonds are very frail and weak, about one-twentieth as strong as covalent bonds. The bonds are made, broken, and remade very quickly. Each hydrogen bond lasts only a few trillionths of a second, but the constant synthesis of new bonds with a succession of partners acquires equilibrium. Therefore, a significant percentage of all the water molecules are bonded to their neighbors, making water a more orderly structured liquid than most other known liquids. A property related to cohesion is surface tension, a measure of how difficult it is to stretch or break the surface of a liquid. Water is known to have a greater surface tension than most other liquids. An ordered arrangement of hydrogen-bonded water molecules is present at the boundary between water and air. As a result water behaves as though it is coated with an invisible film along the surface. An example how the cohesion of water affects the functioning of living organisms is present in plants. Evaporation from the leaves in plants pulls water up from the roots. Cohesion due to hydrogen bonding helps hold the column of water molecules together within the xylem vessels located in the stem or trunk of a plant. One of the most important bonds of these is the hydrogen bond, a weak chemical bond that is present in essential biological molecules such as water and polypeptides. A hydrogen bond is defined by Campbell and Reece as occurring when a hydrogen atom is covalently bonded to an electronegative atom but attracted to another electronegative atom. In water molecules, there are several key reasons why hydrogen bonds can be formed and explaining them in water a good way to show the chemistry. Firstly, the presence of covalent bond between the hydrogen and the oxygen means that the electrons in the outer shells of both atoms are shared- 1 electron from hydrogen and 1 electron from oxygen. Since the 2 electrons are shared, they are free to move within the covalent bond to the atom that is the most electronegative. In the case of water, this is oxygen. As a result of the electrons moving to the oxygen side of the bond, the hydrogen becomes less electron-dense and becomes a slight positive charge known as a delta-positive charge. It is this positive charge that has the ability to attract other negatively charged objects, since opposite electrostatic charged atoms attract each other. On the oxygen atom of each water molecule there is a lone pair of electrons that are negatively charged, which makes oxygen delta-negative. This means that between water molecules, the delta-positive hydrogen of one molecule is able to attract a lone pair of electrons from the delta-negative oxygen atom of another water molecule (Fig. 1).…
