How Do Oceanographers Use Trigonometry
Trigonometry is used in everyone's daily life, especially in careers and activities. A career that uses trigonometry is oceanography. I chose an oceanographer because I love aquatic life, and I didn't wasn’t exactly sure how trigonometry was associated with oceanography. Astronomy is another common activity that uses trigonometry. I chose astronomy because I am very interested in space, and how astronomy is also interconnected with trigonometry. Oceanographers use trigonometry every day at work. They use trigonometry for calculating the intensity and height the ocean tides (Blakeman par. 1). Oceanographers also use trigonometry to measure distance. For example, when oceanographers are tracking animals, they use trigonometric ratios to help

This unit's main goal was to use similar triangles to measure the length of a shadow. While using the variables D, H, and L, we have figured out a formula to measure a shadow's length. In order to do this though, everyone had to learn the basic concepts of similarity, congruence, right triangles, and trigonometry.…

For instance, in pumping operations, rise over run calculations are essential, along with friction loss per foot of a pressure and volume of a moving water column in a hose line. You need to be quick thinking on your feet and know what formula/calculation you will be using because most of these calculations will be used in pressure situations. In a fuel loading situation, a basic formula is used to calculate given structure depending on its use and resources needed, including water supplies. Trigonometry and geometry are used to determine a given slope and fuel load as well. Temperature, wind direction and speed calculations are essential to safe brush and forest fire extinguishing. Firefighter aircrews have to use math to determine their fuel requirements and angle of attack for air drops of water and retardant over a wild land fire.…

Surveyors often use triangulation to measure distance. Starting at a known location and elevation, surveyors measure a length to create a base line and then use a theodolite to measure an angle to an unknown point from each side of the base line (Jains 30-48) The length of the base line and the two known angles allow a computer or person to determine the location of the third point.…

Last Tuesday, we took a trip to Huntington Beach and observed the ocean, sand, waves, tides, life on shore, wind, currents, sea bedding, sediments, and the fully developed sea. It was around 4 PM when we arrived at the beach, and it was about 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The coastline of the shore is a curve that faces southwest. Winds are disturbing forces that move the waves, and they generate every time there is a density boundary. The cool winds were coming very strong from the West at 251° that it wasn’t a good day to surf at the beach. The waves are movement of energy, and the waves were about 4-6 feet high, but with such hazardous wind conditions, nobody was surfing. If they were to try to surf, the top of the wave would topple over because of the decrease in wave speed and wind.…
