The conflict reflected the bad relations that existed amongst the Spanish settlers and the natives. This arose mainly because of the Spanish attempting to destroy the Indians’ religion, banning traditional dances and idols.…
To underline another significant point, these native Indians are totally defenseless, and vulnerable to every single dangerous attack by the Spaniards. When Indians flee to mountains, these inhuman, cruel Spanish captains pursue them with fierce dogs to attack and tear them into several pieces. In addition to that, if Indians kill only one Christian, they would kill a hundred Indians in return. This is the misconception of our modern times that one individual feels himself superior to other, this one to that, that one to this; thus there occurs hierarchical relationships which can not be changed easily.…
The Aztecs saw the Spanish as gods and showered them with gifts and sacrifices. Him and his people were seen as gods, which was one advantage that Cortés knew he had control over. He knew that if he can control the Aztecs that he would be able to take over their land. The Spanish saw the kind of resources and how rich their land was of gold and started to take full advantage of the Aztecs. They didn’t like some of the things that the Aztecs did so feelings of hate began to arise within the Spanish. The hate that the Spanish had they got other enemy tribes to go against them and help take over the rest of the land.…
Though the techniques of the Spanish were vicious in that they slaughtered tribes, pilfered their fortunes, and tried to convert them to the catholic faith; ultimately in the end they eternally associated a portion of the tribes of the Americas. They killed about 25 million of the indigenous people of the Americas but that doesn’t even measure up to how much money they robbed from the tribes. Through their conquests they connected the tribes through their singular language, and catholic religion that they imposed on the people. Consequently, even though they killed, stole from, and force fed the indigenous people the catholic religion. They forever connected them through all of the pain and suffering they…
The Spaniards came to the new world in search of more land to expand the country. The voyage was under the command of Christopher Columbus. Originally Columbus had wanted to sail to Asia and conquer more land with financial support from Isabella and Ferdinand, Spanish royalty. Upon arrival on the coast of the "New World" Columbus made contact with the Native Americans. When those back in Spain wanted updates, Columbus and his men put their "encounters" with the Natives as delicately as possible. These encounters were really what Columbus and the other men did to the Natives. When the Natives refused to work for the Spaniards, the natives were brutally attacked. Some small wars broke out between the Spaniards and Natives causing more casualties to the Natives than the Spaniards. When the news of these casualties finally reached Spain, the pope decided to take control of the situation, sending over missionaries and teacher to compensate for the early harsh treatment to the Natives.…
One form of violence was between the Europeans and the Indians. It is well documented that the Spanish butchered, beat, and killed countless Indians in order to secure territory. In general, all of the various European nationalities used their advantages in war tactics to force the Indians off of their own lands and onto lands that they were unfamiliar with. This in turn caused the Indians a great amount of hardship, because they now did not know the best places to hunt, or to gather berries, or to garden, or where to build their homesteads. By using violence to force the Indians to move away from their familiar homelands, the Europeans also caused a breakdown of the reciprocal tribal relationships.…
The Spanish government sent numerous amounts of military expeditions in the 1500’s in order to obtain more land and rule over the Natives. Francisco Coronado, who was a conquistador, led an army through what is now southwestern United States. Coronado and his men treated the Natives as if they were slaves. This was due to a command…
Most of the beginning of American history seems like a race of conquest between the Spaniards and Europeans with Native Americans caught in the crossfire. A seemingly peaceful group of people, the Native Americans were under constant attack from the moment settlers arrived into their territory. Historians can pull from first-hand accounts and primary sources to piece together the history of this nation. One Spainard exploratory mission wrecked off the coast of Florida with about 400 men (OTP S1-6, OTP 22). After long battles and shipwrecks, the expedition was cut short and only four men survived, one an African slave and Spanish explorer named Alvar Nunez Cabeza De Vaca. De Vaca wrote a narrative explaining his encounters with Native Americans who had never seen white or black people before. De Vaca described the Indians as “war like people…and protect themselves from their enemies as they would have if they had been raised in Italy and in continuous war” (OTP S1-6). He explains in his narrative…
The First English settlers to arrive and start to colonize northeast America, came into conflict with the native populations over territories and land. The English viewed the natives as a savage people that was…
Now we might ask why didn't they "just" exploit the land and leave the native cultures be. Which brings me to the second reason, which is more from a cultural perspective. Example: Why did Spanish conquistadors think the natives in Sounth America couldn't be human and…
3. The relationship between the Spanish and the natives was hostile. The Spanish initially came to get a hold of the treasure belonging to the Aztecs of Mexico but they ended up exposing the natives to smallpox which allowed them to be conquered easily in a second attempt by Hernando Cortes.…
Revenge was the only feasible option for the natives because how cruel the Europeans were to…
Imagine living a normal life doing nothing severely bad. now imagine being kicked out of your own home because the government said so. does that seem fair. the Indians lived in Georgia, they had a pretty normal life. Then the Americans kicks them out.…
Beginning in 1492 when the Spanish under the crown of Castile invaded the Americas, where their first settlement was in Santo Domingo, their main motivations were trade and the spread of the Catholic faith through indigenous conversions and economic gain. Due to these objectives they intervened and attempted to change every facet of the indigenous way of life including their ‘notions of spirituality, witchcraft, and intoxication’. The indigenous population had formally been removed from the jurisdiction of the inquisition by order of King Phillip the second in 1571, however the native people of Mexico and other invaded lands of the Americas were still prosecuted on accounts of witchcraft or being Nauatil (witches).…
At the start of the seventeenth century, Native Americans greeted European settlers with much excitement. They regarded settlers as strange, but were interested to learn about the new tools and weapons Europeans brought with them. The native people were more than accommodating to the settlers, but as time passed, Europeans took advantage of their generosity. “Once these newcomers disembarked and began to feel their way across the continent, they forever altered the course and pace of native development.” Native Americans and Europeans faced many conflicts due to their vast differences in language, religion and culture. European settlers’ inability to understand and respect Native Americans lead to many struggles that would eventually erupt into violent warfare.…
