The beginnings of World War II, which started in 1939 and officially ended in 1945, can be linked to the results of World War 1, which ended just two decades before. The Allied nations, who emerged victorious in WWI, imposed bleak punishments on Germany, through the peace treaty agreement known as Treaty of Versailles. Instead of accepting their penalty, Germany became bitter and the harsh terms of the treaty fuelled the rise of nationalism, Economic factors, and Appeasement and isolationism.
An armistice was signed on 11 November 1918 and , in January 1919; six months of negotiations began on a formal peace treaty, leading to the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, which aimed to eliminate the threat of German's naval power and to terminate its overseas empire. Large amounts of land, including colonies in Africa, were taken back from Germany. All lands acquired from Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Lithuania and Poland, were returned to those countries. Germany was asked to: reduce its army to a maximum of 100,000 men; stop the importation and production of war paraphernalia; limit its naval force to 24 ships and 15000 men only; dispose of all its heavy armaments; and abolish air force. Germany was forced to agree to pay the Allies for the damage they suffered during the war. The calculated bill amounted to 442 billion USD in today's money.
