How Did Culture Affect England's Culture
Culture can be defined as the aspects that make up a group of people, ranging from religious beliefs to the food that is common to that area of the world (Zimmerman, 2017). Culture varies from region to region and is passed to the next generation. It can change throughout time and is shaped by historical events and times of conflict. One country that is rich in culture is England. Being one of America’s strongest allies and the fact that the English were some of the earliest American pioneers, it is easy to assume that America and England’s cultures are parallel, but they are not. Though there are many similar aspects, England’s history, geography, government, and even their weather can define their very own culture.

One significant event happened during World War II, the Battle of Britain. Starting on July 10, 1940, the German Air Force, or Luftwaffe, began attacking English docks and boats. This came in the wake of France surrendering to Hitler, which gave England a clue that they may be attacked next. In response to these bombings, the Royal Air Force attacked with their aircrafts, which were called Spitfires and Hurricanes (Battle of Britain, n.d.). The war had already exhausted the nation’s economy, so when the Axis led attack took place, there was concern that resources would too limited to fight back, the government called up the local civilian population to donate all their pots and pans, this way they could be melted down and made in Hurricanes and Spitfires. The locals gave everything they had without a question. Even after this donation, the Royal Air Force was still significantly outnumbered. However, they still carried out the attack on the Luftwaffe, where they destroyed 1,500 of the German’s aircrafts. The remaining Luftwaffe retreated allowing England to claim victory. Today, July 10th is a national holiday that people can look back on the heroism of their military, and the willingness of their countrymen to come together in a time of
